The names are not special but they are linked to our business so they have a great deal of importance to us and our traffic etc.

At the very begining you had to register domain names through Internic which eventually became networksolutions.


It was $70/year.

There was no one else doing domain registerations till ICANN changed their policies.

Though you could register them with internic/networksolutions, skip paying them the money, use the domain for about 45 days while they sent you payment reminders and then eventually cut it off. This was an endless cycle, as they did not care how many you regged, nor how many non payments you had.
My friend was really into doing this, at times he had 40-50 networksolutions payment reminders arriving per day.
