I haven't really been to many conventions. I went one day, during the day, to a sci fi convention that some friends of mine were in, and I got to hang and have dinner with some Oscar winning special effects engineers and screenwriters. But other than that, I have no experience with conventions other than adult ones.

But I'm trying to branch out my networking... so, any experiences anyone would care to share?

Mainstream is very vague, I mean there are lots of things you can do and so (obviously) have better profit margins than others (provided you get it to work)

Mainstream seem smore uptight. It's all business like and the seminars are about building relationships and doing workshops I believe.
