Is DirectNIC in a hurricane secure datacenter or a regular office building?

Looks like Ivan is heading your way.

Who else is in Louisiana, Alabama, Pensacola, FL?

Directnic is safe, Billy can handle any hurricane, he's already got his yellow raincoat on and is out there standing guard - he can't pick football games worth shit tho.

Power is what you have to worry about.

We went 7 days without power from Frances. Batteries and generators can only go so far. Even Bellsouth's backup generators went down here. That has never happened before.
Scary as hell if you run a large business completely dependent on electricity to function.

If a hurricane hits south LA you guys might not see me for awhile. I'll be down there slinging whatever.

I'm too far north in Louisiana to get hit. Would be happy to travel south with a load of felt or generators though.

This fucker is as big as Frances and twice as powerful. It's something like 400 miles wide. How far north are you?

I don't know for sure, but I'm willing to bet Michael has a few backup plans in place for DirectNic.

Looks like Ivan's headed towards my son in Biloxi too.

As far as you can get almost. Very Northwest in Shreveport, LA. Only thing I'm worried about is everyone stopping in Shreveport to play at the casinos here.

You're going to ride it out? This is a Cat 5. Windows and roofs will be blowing out and off with this storm.

Alabama isn't smart enough for a mandatory evacuation. We'll be catching their debris all the way up here.

yea that's why I was asking i've been with out power for a little over a week between the last two storms.. So that's why I was wondering if their data center goes down.. will it affect domains if you use your own name servers?

As of now yes. Don't really know which way to run. Waiting on it to get in the Gulf before we decide. If it gets in the Gulf and stays at Cat 5 we'll probably run to Houston.

DirectNIC is hosted at a datacenter we own in New Orleans. It is on the 11th floor of a class A skyscraper. The building can withstand 250 MPH winds.

On the 10th floor we have a huge Catipiller generator, we just tapped off out 2,000 gallon diesel tank, and have a contract to have it filled again for weeks at a time if needed.

Now of course the real issue is I am currently in New Orleans, and people are asking me to head back to Tampa ASAP. They claim the storm is following me....

Baton Rouge here. It''s hard to say I hope that fucker goes somewhere else, because it just seems mean to wish it on anyone. We aren't on the coast, so I am not extremely worried, but we will get one hell of a storm if it comes this way. Too early to tell though. Good luck to anyone in it's path.

Gee thank Stallion.

Actually I think I will be staying here.... infact, if the Hurricane hits, I will be staying in the Zipa Data Center ( where DirectNIC is hosted).

I know I will have power and internet access there.

For the record, the datacenter we own, was built by ENRON. Since they had all that "paper money" they built a world class datacenter which we picked up for pennies on the dollar.

Anyone visit New Orleans should hit me up, we can give tours of the operation!

Stay safe. Looks like you guys might just get the west side of it hopefully.

That building sounds solid as a rock if it can handle 250 MPH winds.

Good luck to everyone.

I am. It's gonna be a major clusterfuck if this thing ends up being as big as they think. I bet the FL panhandle and Alabama/Mississippi will end up without power, way inland. I remember when Opal came through a few years ago. It was only a 3 I think, and the power was out for days. Plus, I just cleaned my yard up and planted some stuff last week, so I'm sure I can kiss all that goodbye.

Where are Directnic's own Direct DNS nameserver machines? Are they in the same building or are they in other locations?

I have 126 domains at Directnic and I am in the process of transferring a high value domain to there right now (Network Solutions just sent the Registrar Transfer Request Completion email).

I hope it all holds together. And how long after NS signs off on the transfer will I see the domain in my Directnic account?

I am at DirectNIC offices now, we do have back up servers across the country incase of a catastrophe.

I went to datacenter, which is on 11th floor. All windows on that floor have double re-enforced storm shutters.

I am confident enough in this space that if Ivan hits, I will be in datacenter during the storm.

Not sure if Atlanta will get this one or not, but even the inland states are going to get ferocious rain and flooding from this storm.
