Meta Tags - the dos and don'ts
currently i use the META Name="description" Content="..." and the META Name="keywords" Content="..., ..., ..., ..., ..., ..." tags.
i use these mostly for search engines. anyone know the limitations of these tags? what's the maximum amount of characters for each? etc. it seems the more keywords you put in, the better. is this true? should i maximum the amount of keywords? (i need to know how many i can put in to do this.) thx for any info, ------------------ HQ HQ's Daily Nude http://www.hqdailynude.com/ Traffic Trade? http://www.hqdailynude.com/webmasters.html Free Content? http://www.oliver-klozov.com/cgi-bin...i?ref=hqdailyn [This message has been edited by HQ (edited 04-11-2001).] |

I woul like to know as well. If you go to website garage, they will say you don't have enough. But some programs like AddWeb, say you have too many. Or vice versa.
Either way, I get conflicting reports. ![]() ------------------ [email protected] LeeannOnline.com ICQ # 114683191 |

RedShoe,
exactly my problem. do these people just guess at the appropriate amount? does it depend on each search engine individually? or is there an accepted standard of 255 characters per line or something? ------------------ HQ HQ's Daily Nude http://www.hqdailynude.com/ Traffic Trade? http://www.hqdailynude.com/webmasters.html Free Content? http://www.oliver-klozov.com/cgi-bin...i?ref=hqdailyn |

I've found that these limits work decently:
# of chars in description meta tag <= 160 # of chars in keyword meta tag <= 1024 But nowdays I don't use that many chars in the keyword tag. The SE's put little weight on them. On the whole, the importance of the keyword meta tag is overly exaggerated. |

Lord Assmore,
thx for the numbers. although i wouldn't know, i'd have to say that it would make a lot of sense to for an SE to put zero weight on the keywords meta tag. faking in keywords is exactly what SEs are trying to stop. this meta tag makes it way too easy. i wonder if SEs try to match keywords found on your page and in your keyword meta tag? it's hard to say what logic they put into their submission algorithms. ------------------ HQ HQ's Daily Nude http://www.hqdailynude.com/ Traffic Trade? http://www.hqdailynude.com/webmasters.html Free Content? http://www.oliver-klozov.com/cgi-bin...i?ref=hqdailyn |

I think your right HQ, I fairly sure most engines now match keywords found on your page and in your keyword meta tag and give them Much more weight. Plus, the URL plays into that as well on some engines. So, when building multiple sites on the same url throw a couple extra keywords in the url Ex:
Instead of www.yourdomain.com/amateurpics, ad a folder and a extra keyword www.yourdomain.com/amateur/amateurpics |
