Me too Paneer Tikka Masala and Naan Bread. Right now my doc says I need to eat meat, so I'm gonna try cause I'm not getting enough protein or iron. I'm considering it though but I dont' want to get sick from eating meat again.

Another good one I like is Eggwhites on Rye Bread with Salt/Pepper. MMMM

I can understand becoming a vegetarian for health reasons.. even for moral reasons i guess too.

But vegan? Meaning no eggs, no dairy etc..??

I mean, what is the argument behind it?

It's very hard for alot of people to be vegan. There are moral reasons for that as well - What chickens, cows and such go through, etc.

Most vegans will also tell you that milk is actually harmful for the body. Humans are the only creatures that continue drinking milk after infancy.

i love pasta with this one spaghetti sauce from trader joe's. also baked potatoes with quark cheese instead of sour cream, plus a little butter spray and pepper. or there's this great product with the uninspiring name of "vegetarian roast" by quark - it's unfuckingbelievable. put a little butter and herbs on it, roast it and serve with yams and stuffing for thanksgiving.

i love tofu dogs with mustard and maybe relish on a bun. or pull out the braggs and make stir fry with bean sprouts, cabbage, a little carrots, celery, etc. then pour it over white rice and a baked flavored tofu. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

unconnected speaks the truth about tvp - you can make it into anything and it's pure protein. "meat"loaf, hamburger, casseroles, add to spaghetti sauce...

ever try riblets from garden burger? even my non veggie son loves those - the barbecue sauce is fucking mouth watering.

Katlicious72, your doctor must not know much about vegetarian eating. if you're not getting enough protein, try non fat milk several times a day with your regular meals. or eat cheese - low fat is better as the less fat, the more protein. plus soy protein is the only complete vegetable protein and you can eat all sorts of veggie burgers. eggs are highly bio available. you just need to know how much of what to eat.

also most major supermarket chains carry at least a couple of the following brands: morningstar farms, boca, amy's and garden burger. they make vegetarian "meat" that rocks and is full of protein.

I'll take a thick ass steak over a salad any day. A wise man once said, "Vegetables aren't food. Vegetables are what food eats." and I couldn't agree more.

I'm Veggy, but my wife is vegan. She's been going crazy lately cooking wierd middle-eastern grains with tofu and veggies, and I have to say that it is awesome. I get much better nutritian as a vegetarian now than I did when I lived on fast food that's for sure...

I'd go vegan, but I'd miss my Quorn "chicken" patties which have like a trace of milkfat in them as well as Boca Burgers.

I live in Eastern NC which is big-time pork and bbq country so I spend more time than I'd like explaining that I'm healthy, and that vegetarianism isn't that wierd. I can never understand why it makes so many people insecure to hear that people don't eat meat. Guess they're just pissed that they're gonna die sooner...

Damn, how can you survice without a huge bloody piece of meat every now and then...if i dont eat that for a week my body just begs me for it!

I think its unnatural not to eat it. Humans need meat, they were born that way.

Battus,

As a matter of fact, the human body isn't completly "designed" as a perfect meat eating machine.

The human body can perfectly function without meat.

But I don't think it shouldn't be the discussion if we're biologically made to do or don't do things. Humans can live with and without meat (and diary, and yes, milk isn't that healthy for you as some want us to believe).

The thing is that we humans have the choice to choose what we do or don't eat. And that choice is just personal.

I'm vegetarian for almost 8 or 9 years now. I feel comfortable with that, what you do, is your choice.

People wouldn't be safe around me if I don't get some beef every day. I tried a diet in the 80's that was vegatarian... I started seeing walking steaks after a few days. One chubby girl I danced with at the time was the most succulent roast with feet... The rarer the better!

But I do go weeks with nothing but vegatables too. I think it helps the body to cut out some of the toxins now and then. That idea might not have any scientific basis but it works for me... And I weigh the same as I did at 18. ;-)

the body definitely is NOT designed to be a carnivore.. How do I know I am right?
Here is the test I did to prove it on myself..

I have gone 2 years now without really eating me.. I am not really strict about it.. sometimes I go home to the folks place and have a pork chop, but it is very rare.. so in two years I have eaten meat about 3 times.. It has been a looooonnnggg time since I last ate meat before this week..
3 days back we were downtown doing some shopping, and I was fucking starved.. and I mean so hungry I was having trouble thinking properly.. It just snuck up on me.. so I went to food court and a place selling Mexican Pizza was the first place I saw.. I ordered a slice, sat down and chowed down.. What a fucking relief.. until about 3 minutes later when I had to run to the bathroom and it ALL came right back up again.. My body is at a point now that it just rejects meat from my system..

HOWEVER, do the same test with vegetables.. go 2 years without eating a veggie I will gaurantee your body will not reject the first carrot you put into your system, because you body doesn't hav eto get used to eating veggies, it is wired for them from birth..

Another thing, 6 months after giving up meat I lost about 35 lbs.. My lifestyle, if anything, got even less energetic than when I was eating meat and I still lost all that weight..

TVP is the most amazing tasting food I have ever had.. made with curry it is unbelievable.. No way in hell would I give it up..

We recently stopped drinking dairy products as well and that wasn't hard to give up either..

I dont' know if you guys have it down in the US, but we have something up here called 'Sensational Soy Blends' ( http://sensationalsoy.ca ) .. These drinks are simply to die for.. I am serious when I say I have NEVER in my life drank anything that tasted this good.. they are seriously addictive.. and they are so healthy for you it isn't funny.. Plus they have vanilla flavour which goes great in tea. But we even use the fruit flavoured drinks in our cereal.. They are just heaven..

I read somewhere that eating excessive meat, especiallyn beef will increase your risk of cancer, and that sometimes meat will rot in your intestines and make you sick.

It was from a medical publication, and they said to try to eat as little meat as possible, maybe some chicken, but beef can really increase your risk of getting cancer.

Some time for breakfast cut up a cube of tofu into small 1/2 inch squares and mix in a pan with pesto, and roasted pine nuts (spinach and/or sundried tomato if you're into it) making sure to breakup the tofu while cooking until it reaches a scrambled egg consistancy. Scramble as you would eggs and then add feta cheese like the last 30-45 seconds. Eat in a bowl as is or throw it in a fresh warm tortilla for the bombest veggie breakfast burrito you've ever had. I am no longer vegetarian but this is still by far my favorite thing to eat in the a.m.
