Bye Bye Winston Cup..Hello Nextel
sponsorship dollars can ruin the noteriety of an event. this is a bad decision because there are already so many titled races....
************************ http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor...7-nextel_x.htm Nextel set to replace Winston as NASCAR's title sponsor By Chris Jenkins, USA TODAY The contract hasn't been signed yet, but an agreement with Nextel to replace Winston as the title sponsor of NASCAR's top racing series appears to be imminent. A NASCAR source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to the Associated Press that the wireless communications giant will be announced as the title sponsor Thursday at a news conference in New York's Times Square. (Related item: Title sponsorship can be complicated) ********************************************** (and another for all sponsorship/promotion junkies) ********************************************** Title sponsorship can be complicated By Michael Hiestand and Chris Jenkins, USA TODAY NASCAR is now shopping prime real estate. For sponsors, the pitch is clear: Imagine all the times you'd heard about the Winston Cup ? then imagine your name replacing the cigarette brand that's leaving NASCAR's top marquee. But, can NASCAR give one sponsor a new perch looming over the others and keep everybody happy in a sport where sponsors already are so pervasive? Consider Nextel, the telecommunications marketer that already has sports tie-ins with the National Hockey League and Major League Baseball teams and has been the focus of media speculation on Winston's replacement. Monday, Nextel spokeswoman Audrey Schaefer said only that "we get approached by companies (about deals) every day. And we don't discuss any of them unless they come to fruition." NASCAR declined comment. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor...nsorship_x.htm
