No democracy in Myanmar

Should we send in the troops?...nah....theres no infrastructure to destroy and rebuild.

Universities Across Myanmar Shut Down
Universities, Party Offices Closed Across Myanmar a Day After Aung San Suu Kyi's Detention

YANGON, Myanmar June 1 ?
Myanmar's military junta closed universities and shut down offices of pro-democracy leader Ang San Suu Kyi's party on Sunday, after she and some of her key aides were detained.

Myanmar's universities, the heart of the repressive country's democracy movement, were scheduled to start a new semester Monday, and authorities likely feared students would protest Suu Kyi's arrest.

A senior faculty member at a leading university said on condition of anonymity that authorities told lecturers not to reopen.

Suu Kyi, the 1991 Nobel Peace laureate, and 19 members of her National League for Democracy party were detained after thousands of pro-government protesters clashed with her supporters in northern Myanmar. The violence Friday left four people dead and 50 injured.

The government closed the party's headquarters in Yangon, and residents and NLD sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said at least a half dozen of the party's other offices were shut down by Sunday.

European and American diplomats who tried to visit the residences of NLD party chairman Aung Shwe and spokesman U Lwin were turned away by government officials Sunday.

"We were told that we are not allowed to go in and told that U Lwin is not allowed to see us," a Western ambassador said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

In London, British Foreign Office Minister Mike O'Brien called on Myanmar authorities "to release immediately Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other party members." Daw is an honorific title.

O'Brien said he had received credible reports in recent weeks that government-backed groups, including the Union Solidarity Development Association, were inciting people to protest against Suu Kyi's party.

Friday's violence erupted when Suu Kyi's motorcade tried to pass through a crowd of about 5,000 pro-government protesters in northern Myanmar, Brig. Gen. Than Tun said Saturday.

Than Tun and other government officials have accused Suu Kyi of making inflammatory speeches, critical of the ruling junta, that incite people to violence.

Suu Kyi's supporters have complained that the pro-junta USDA was intimidating them when they went to greet her during a monthlong visit in the country's north.

"They are local militias equipped with slingshots and bamboo sticks who come out and harass her supporters," said Aung Zaw, editor of The Irrawaddy, a magazine based in Thailand that focuses on Myanmar.

"Suu Kyi and her people are like chickens in a basket. The military can take them out and do whatever they want to do," he told The Associated Press in Bangkok in a telephone interview.

Than Tun said Suu Kyi had violated an agreement with the junta by reopening some party offices without telling local authorities.

Myanmar's junta has shut down universities several times since it took power in 1988 because of student demonstrations, once for 3 1/2 years.

Suu Kyi's party won general elections in 1990 but was barred from taking power. She was under house arrest for 1 1/2 years before being released last May, raising hopes that the junta was ready to begin reconciliation and restore civilian rule.

Suu Kyi had been expected to return to Yangon on Wednesday, two days before the arrival of a United Nations envoy who is trying to jump-start talks between the government and the opposition.
