Nfld. demands new deal with Canada

ST. JOHN'S - Fed up with "made-in-Ottawa" decisions about fish stocks, the last province to join Confederation tabled legislation Thursday calling for the renegotiation of its union with Canada.

BACKGROUNDER: To the last fish: the codless sea

The government of Newfoundland and Labrador introduced a bill demanding joint control over the fishing industry, which is now exclusively a federal responsibility.

It says Ottawa's recent decision to all but shut down the cod fishery proves that the province needs a voice in the way ocean stocks are managed.

"Again we have a made-in-Ottawa decision thrust upon us without regard and respect for the consensus of the people of this province," Premier Roger Grimes told the legislature.

"This situation can no longer be allowed to stand," Grimes said. "Time is running out to save our fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador."

Grimes has urged Liberal members of Parliament from his province to sit as independents in the House of Commons to protest against the decision to close most of the remaining cod fishery.

In an interview with CBC Newsworld, Grimes disputed suggestions that Thursday's bill is merely an attempt to win votes in his province. The premier said it's a coincidence that he intends to call an election before the end of the year.

Grimes said Canada should take the demand to renegotiate the terms of Confederation seriously, and not dismiss it even before his legislature holds a full debate on the bill next week.

"It's not limited only to the fishery," the premier said. "There's a deep-rooted feeling in Newfoundland and Labrador that we are not respected in Canada, that our views are not given full thought."
