Php5
Looks like PHP5 is on the way. The PHP dev team have come up with a presentation with some details about the changes which can be seen at;
http://talks.php.net/show/php5intro Looks like they are just adding things java (and in some cases c) had years ago. The best thing I can see is the new stream API, which will make writing software that uses socket based connections (ie. spiders, mail readers and *gasp* auto submitters) alot less painful. I couldn't find a release target, so if anyone knows, let me know.

Weee! I started doing PHP when it was called PHP/FI, the default filename extension was .phtml. Then when php3 came out, we moved from .phtml to .php3. When four rolled out, we got smart and moved to .php. It won't change from that, god damnit.
Yes, it's adding things other languages have had since long ago. Good! Even with as limited functionality as PHP had in 1996, when we got excited by the addition of curly braces, it's growth has outpaced that of any other web-centric language. Today we've got PHP applications which are Enterprise Grade. We recently sold a combined install of our three main products. Total lines of PHP: 36,344; total lines of C: 8,198. I remember at the first ia2000 show I went to, in Orlando in 1997, I talked to everyone who would listen about "PHP". I got lots of blank stares and "What's Apache?", and in the last few years wandering around the show floor, I see other products written in it, and people discussing it. Makes me feel all warm inside. Ok, that's enough sharing for now. b.
