Has anyone ever used Satellite internet?

I am planning on being in the middle of nowhere. However, I want to be online at least 6-8 hours a day still. So I am looking into getting internet where there is none.

If you get it, can you also send out? One person was saying you can only receive and not transmit, however i thought you must be able to send also. Satellite phone go both ways, why not internet.

If anyone knows any good providers in Canada please let me know. Through google i keep running into blocks.

Way back in the day I went through a training course for installing satellite internet systems. I was going to travel around and install systems at a major hotel chain.

It never happened but one thing I took note of, is the only way I'd ever have sat internet service was if it was the last possible choice. It was extremely slow and upload was limited to something like 250mbs but that was over 10 years ago.. Even still I don't think it's much better today..

I can't remember, but I think they used dial up for the upload and there was a data cap on the download of something like 2gigs/mth

Mobile not an option?
even a 3g connection is better than sat.

Garbage. And once you hit like 100mb in transfer each day, you're limited for the next 24 hours.

my parents have satellite (xplornet) in rural southwestern ontario and it pretty much sucks. they typically get between 1-3 mbs down and .5 up for about $75 a month. an internet stick is much faster but bandwidth costs more. i have been using the sticks from bell for years when i am not at home and at the cottage. as long as there is coverage, it works well.

I will check into the sticks, thanks.
There is no coverage there at all. No cell phone coverage or anything.

I think xplornet will be your only option then. I've had it at home for a few years now. Since I live in the country and its too hilly for line of sight. 40 gig pkg will run you $100/month. Not the fastest, but you make do with what you have.

To answer your original question, my experience with satellite internet has always been bad. Sporadic, slow (upload speeds were extremely slow), limited. I wouldn't consider using it for work as my primary line. I'm sure it depends on the country, provider, etc. but this is the experience I've had.

Satellite sucks big time, its very expensive slow and cuts out during storms (snow or rain) I switched to Verizon LTE Internet 4 times as fast as Hugesnet way more reliable and costs me less. I get 10gigs for $60 and just upgraded to 20gigs for $90. Its still expensive but thats the price i pay to live out in the middle of nowhere ?

We had it for a while and it was total shit. Thunderstorm rolled in and it was gone. I recall someone else saying that they had issues with Snow as well.

I too live just outside town and do in fact have LOS internet, expensive though, to put in country terms: "it's higher than a fucking cows ass" radio dish.... 400 per month.. more or less 80/80... same price as fedex for over night once a week to the client so it's no big deal I guess....

I'm hearing and reading starlight is 1.5/1.5 same as DSL and I also was told you'll never get good upload because that all goes to the military

Wow. That's expensive. The same provider (xplornet) for my dish, offers LOS 4g at half the price of my service. But the coverage stops 5km away. And there's a big ass hill between me and the tower.

I used to have WiMAX that I hooked to a parabolic antennae that I had to mount on the roof for additional gain. Was fine (and unmonitored) until our two telecoms dumped it. They tried to get me to switch to their 3G hub. $50/month 2 gig cap. $10/gig overage. I told them I got more than that with my phone. Sadly satellite ended up being my only option

in my case the company I lease the house from also owns a communication company...the owner got sick of crappy internet service so he went to the source which is in downtown LA... leased a 400/400 connection..... leased a rooftop 7 blocks from the source, set up a dish and hit 'MT Wilson' LOS, from there LOS to another peak, then to 'Castro Peak' which the owner happens to also own.... then he went LOS to his house down the street from the place I live in..... THEN I got him to put a tower in the backyard on a hill where I'm at which is LOS from the roof of his guest house and SHAZZZAMMM!

no caps or anything...just promised 36/36 but in reality I get average 80/80 for $400 per, plus I had to pay a $500 setup fee which considering the price of the tower isn't much at all.. I still have cable for BU because the radio drops every now and then for an hour or so once or twice a week randomly...

satellite internet

A company I worked for, the head accountant was the stupidest person I ever met. She explained our salt mine in western Kansas had no Internet service, as the phone lines there were junk. I suggested satellite internet and her reply was, "how do you run a wire to the satellite?"
