Canon PowerShot S230 Digital ELPH. 3 megapixels, small, sleek, and highly regarded. Slap a 512MB compactflash card in there and you can even take a few minutes worth of 640x480 video.

I use Sony Cybershot. It's a workhorse and very easy to use.

Some of you will recognize this location. ;-)

I know it's a bit cheaper than your price range, but I thought I'd mention it...

I picked up a Canon powershot A200 for $AUD199 recently (about $US120) - the RRP is $AUD399. The store was phasing out their digital camera stock lines, so they were selling brand new stock at a significantly reduced price.

Here's a sample macro shot:

<img src="http://media.sensationcontent.com/rowan/tree800.jpg" width=800 height=600>

Originally taken at 1600x1200 super fine, reduced to half size.

I bought this camera as a cheap point and shoot digital that I could take everywhere (I usually use a more bulky 35mm SLR), but the image quality and feature list are surprisingly good. It wasn't until after I purchased the camera that I actually looked at some reviews - they're all good.

Great camera..but the battery only lasts for only 1 hour of continuous shooting...got to get a second battery!
