The post I found that image in had this explanation:

At some point in 1955, there was 4 of them. I put them in the timeline of the DeLorean.

The one Marty used in the first Back to the Future.
The one the old Biff used to give the young Biff the almanac.
The one Marty used in the Second Back to the Future to fix the alternate timeline.
The one hidden by Doc in 1885 and fixed by them later.

So, the travel is

from 1985 Marty go to 1955 and go back to 1985
from 1985 Marty go to 2015
from 2015 Biff go to 1955 then back to 2015
from 2015 Marty go to Alternate-1985 then to 1955
from 1955 Doc go to 1885 and leave it there until it was retrieved by Marty in 1955
from 1955 Marty go to 1885 and finally to 1985

I would have said 1, but doesn't he take a second one back in the second movie, or does he only run around the corner to the doc by the clock tower, at the end of the film.

He definitely speaks to the doc after the car goes back to the future, bringing the end of the first one back into the end of the second.

Actually, YOU are correct. That complex map that someone else posted is wrong. There are 5 Deloreans, not 4. Now you can all have a good night's sleep knowing this mystery is solved.
