Well we are definetly not one of the big boys as much as we would like to be. We have 40 niche sites, some are bodybuilders, toe suckers, red asses, high school boys etc. We pay $40+ per signup or 60% recurring and 15% webmaster referral. I'm curious... Did these users upt-in to being mailed by you? And what exactly did they agree to? I think the idea of voluntary addition is great, but it certainly seems like people stretch the terms.
