Should I add memory or not??? to my new desktop pc

got a $500 Acer Aspire M3970-U5022
comes with 6 gig, can go up to 16, (remove the 3 2gs, with 4 x 4g)
its 64 bit windows so I assume that means 16 gigs ram is fine
$104 from crucial would cover it
do I pull the trigger?

I don't think I would go cheap on a computer and then go balls out on RAM just because it's an option.

I figure max it out, its 64 bit so should be fine, I'm waiting for the memory then i'll make the move,
replacing the dell dimension 8400 that has serviced me well since 2004
after I ordered the Acer from my buddy at pc connection, I realized, why? the DELL desktop i still have is still motoring along, I do have to hit it like fonzie to start now, pushing the start button alone won't start it.
I doubt the Acer will run for 6 years

I usually max mine out so that I get good time out of them. The one I'm typing on right now is running 4 years. Sure, I wouldn't mind a brand-new one, but it's not negatively impacting my performance at all so no big deal. Last week I had to change the video card, other than that it's been a champ.

I have 12 gigs in this machine and never use more than 50% of it.

Dropping in a SSD was the best thing I ever did, the speed that it operates at now is insane.

Keep your drive backed up. Your SSD will die suddenly. The speed is great but after personally losing 3 SSDs in a couple of years I stopped using them entirely. They're too expensive to be that undependable.

And no, I didn't do anything stupid with them like defragging.

Why has no one asked what the OP is using the machine for before answering?

Does it matter? Upgrades are kewl even if completely unnecessary.

I didn't notice any change when I went from 4 GB to 8 GB so I would say no.

One of my rules about RAm is "too much is never enough".

I have 24gb and After Effects can use up all of it.

I would just add another stick of 2 GB ram so you have 4 sticks. Then it should run in dual-channel mode.

I just use my SSD for the OS and programs. Keep all the data on separate drives so if the SSD goes out I don't lose much.

I just looked up the model number he quoted and it says this for the graphics card:

64MB Intel HD Graphics 2000 embedded graphics

I think the money would have been better spent on a new graphics card instead of more RAM.

Exactly my point. Unless he is rendering crazy shit, MAHOOSIVE photoshop files with 23098230982 layers etc, then more ram is pointless.
