    Adult Toy Site Question

    Hi,

I'm thinking of setting up an adult toy site (mostly vibrators). I have some mainstream sites Wordpress sites I've developed and wanted to explore some of the issues involved in this crossover. I'd probably only be having toy review posts and some general articles, so only pictures of the vibrators would be shown.

o Would an adult toy site require age verification?

o Would an adult toy site have to be 2257 compliant?

o Would I have to worry about federal, state or community obscenity laws? I'm from Massachusetts

o With regards to SEO, what would be my best sources of backlinks?
I'm assuming the usual article backlinks from GoArticles and Ezinearrticles would
not be an option. How about social bookmarking and Web2.0 backlinks?

So, in essence is a generic adult toy affiliate site considered to be pornographic
and what's the best options for doing SEO?

    Advice Appreciated

    Michael

It depends where (country) do you hosting your site, though...

o Would an adult toy site require age verification?
    - I don't think so..

o Would an adult toy site have to be 2257 compliant?
    - Nope, no girls pics - no 2257 needed.

o Would I have to worry about federal, state or community obscenity laws? I'm from Massachusetts
    - I have no idea... I am European.

o With regards to SEO, what would be my best sources of backlinks?

    - Could be... every link has it's value... more keyword targeted the better

So, in essence is a generic adult toy affiliate site considered to be pornographic
and what's the best options for doing SEO?
    - I don't think that dido or wand is as considered pornography.

I hope that someone here from Massachusetts will be able to tell you about the local laws.

    Good luck!

2257 would not be an issue unless you show depictions of models using the toys.

I will be hosting in the US thinking of using NakedHosting, but open to suggestions.

My other question has to do with how "suggestive" the language can be in the
reviews and how that impacts the perception of the site as pornographic.

Appreciate all the responses and advice

Q: Would an adult toy site require age verification?

A: This is an interesting question. Some porn sites (not most) provide a question to the visiting surfer that says: "Are you over 18? Yes / No". Largely, these efforts to stop underage people are futile, because the young person clicks "Yes" and then enters the site anyway.

Some search engine advertisers will need the All persons are above 18 per 2257 blurb if you want to advertise with them even if you arent selling "porn" I just went through that with yahoo again. Be prepared for a LOT of work keeping up if you want to be successful at the toy business. Alot of people have seen the shiny ads and think hey if I go set up a site I will make more money than I can count. They soon find out it is a full time job and making money is much harder because thousands of people a day say the same thing and whore out the market for everyone else. Im not complaining because January sales were up 600% over Dec 09 but it takes long days and nights to keep up with newest stuff.
              Good Luck
