Do you know of any online resources where I can find adult content, mainly pictures,
that are in the public domain, or are free to use with an appropriate acknowledgement?

There really is no public domain of adult content. That's sort of just a myth. Sorry hon. If you need content for your free site and are willing to link to the source, have you tried like free hosted galleries from various affiliate programs?

The thing about that would be, if you use it for promotions and the sites you are promoting dont have that content then the surfers will either NOT buy, or they simply wont stay, and in the long run, if its not profitable for the company, then you wont be making anything either.

get a few (dumb)friends together, sign a few releases, copies some id's and let the camera do the work afterwards.. tell them its for an art project.

Are you sure that old photos are illegal? What about those black and white photos from the 1950s? I see people selling them on Ebay, stating that those are public domain. As a matter of fact, I've bought a buck load of them to be used as art.

No public domain pictures, you still need permission to use the images and you are not going to get that.

But I recall some content producer who would take pictures of pro girls making it look as if it was amateur porn, I just forgot their URL.
