hosting questions....

if ive got a high traffic adult site, why would i choose dedicated over virtual hosting???

Both guarantee 99.99% up time...and unlimited domain hosting....but yet virtuals hella cheaper...why???

your thoughts....

Faster display.. faster sql queries.. 100% reliable.

Virtual hosts will be faster/slower depending on what the other people on your server are doing.

There are a number of reasons to switch to dedicated over virtual but the two most prominent ones are:
1) System resources: your site grows too large to be adequately supported on a multi user system where resources are shared so you need your own dedicated server to handle your increase in traffic.

2) Security and Stability: As your website becomes more profitable the increased cost of a dedicated server will be offset by the possible losses that you would incur if some other user on the system allowed the server to be exploited, or if they used too many resources that forced the server to crash. So you would be switching to a dedicated server to make sure that no other users bad decisions, actions, or even accidents have an affect on your site.

In plain english :

you use too much ressources and jeopardize the service to the other clients on the virtual server, the host will tell you to move.

Read the fine prints of AUP & TOS of hosts... it is sorta said in a complicated way.

dedicated: more secure, more reliable, more resources available to you (to run scripts/db's), unlimited domains,...

(a dedicated server @ OC3 Networks = $99. That's only 2 or 3 PPS sales.)

Also virtual is not always cheaper when you get alot of disk space and higher bandwidth virtual hosting can become way more expensive.

dedicated servers mean you get full use of the server, you don't share resources with others and that means your sites will generally be faster and more "snappy". Plus as menitoned dedicated servers are A LOT more secure, by nature that only you have access to it and only you run scripts on it.

cheers,
Luke
