Q for Unix gurus: How can I setup a 404 page

My website is hosted on a Unix server, and I would like to setup a custom 404 page because I receive a lot of "page not found" traffic. I understand I need to edit a .htaccess file, can someone give me a few clues on how to do this?

Try adding:

Quote:
ErrorDocument 404 your_404.html
to your .htaccess

Oh, and if you are not really used to this sort of thing, try reading javascriptkit dot com /howto/ htaccess. shtml (cannot link as I have not yet made thirty posts, evidently). The page after the one linked gets immediately into what I think you are interested in.

Cheers.

It's best to disable .htaccess and edit your apache (?) configuration file (httpd.conf) directly. Otherwise, apache has to search a directory for .htaccess every time it's accessed.

However, .htaccess will work - just a tip.
