          Why are shooting stars now called by their scientific names all of a sudden? I saw one the other night while walking my dog.

                  Actually that's not correct. A "shooting star" is just a casual term for a small meteor which burns out in the Earth atmosphere. If it won't contact with the atmosphere, it won't glow
