I have 30 domains there. $8 a year = $240. $15 a year elsewhere = $450. For $210 a year I'll risk having to sling them $80 if someone spams using my domain. My domains aren't as sensitive to being down a few days as yours are though.

This makes no sense. How can a registar know if you were spamming or not? Just having a bunch of emails with "juicylinks.com" in the from field is absolutely meaningless, since this can be so easily spoofed. Were you hosting with them?

Unreal.
Pay it by c/c, transfer the domain, and charge the $80 back. Isn't what they are doing extortion?

My important domains are outta there ASAP. Damn!

My general train of thought on registrars is to spread yourself out over at least 3 registrars. One username/password becomes compromised and you can lose every site you own within that registrar. Makes sense to spread them out a little bit at the very least.

but if you have domains with 3 registrars... you just increased your chances by 3 of someone getting your username/pass for one of them ....

Ya gets what ya pay for. But even though Directnic is a bit more than some registars you get hosting included if you wish, the banner is only for their hosting service so it is not competing for your adult dollar. You can only post images on the free service but it is fast and reliable.

Their bannerfree hosting is a bit steep for galleries, $15 for 2 gigs (or 1 year, whichever comes first) but that's good to host a front page and link stuff hosted elsewhere. I use that for a couple of low graphic portal pages and host content of any size on my main hosting account.

They don't have a POP account but you can set it up to forward [email protected] and set your regular mail client to send as that

Its fucking ridiculous how godaddy trys to police its customers for spam, especially the drastic measures they take after only 1 or 2 complaints. It should be the job of the webhost to stop its clients from spamming.

I wish directnic would lower its prices to compete with godaddy.

Not entire accurate, policing is a public service, if that were the case a few more registrars would have similar policies or at least some how reproach customers for abuse in this matter. In my opinion the reason they are doing this is simply to free domains and have users shell out the $80 to unfreeze them. Think about it, with the under $10 they charge per domain name thats 8 years you have to be with them before they see $80 of revenue, which isn't even profit, or they can freeze your domain and get $80 from you, $79 of which is profit, not have to care about your ass for eight years and even if you transfer off. How many domains are even eight years old vs 1, 2, 3 or 4 years, certainly a very very tiny portion.

Its all in the $$$.

That's fucked up and probably illegal. You can send emails with anyone's return address on it; they should at the very least check the smtp server and see where it was sent from. So all anyone has to do to shut down competitors is spam with their address? lame.

Problem here is most of you guys don't read TOS's. These registrars, ISPs, hosting companies, all have the power to turn you off for spamming.

And when someone uses one of your domains for spamming you need to immediately contact everyone connected to that domain from your hosting company, to your registrar, to your ISP, that someone is illegally using your domain for spamming.

(1) they're not really using your domain at all...It'd be the same thing as me calling up the White House with a threat and saying I was you. You'd be investigated, but there's nothing to incriminate you...my voice, my caller id, my geographic location, etc. It's just too easy to pull something like that.

(2) They have to acknowledge that people do malicious things to competitors...it is in the spammer's best interest to put a competitor's return email down instead of their own. In fact, only a very ignorant spammer would put his own email down, and someone with the business success of juicylinks.com would not be that ignorant.

(3) What is the body of the spam mail? Not that this proves guilt, but possibly innocence. If the spam itself doesn't profit a business related to the reply email, then there's no motive.

(4) Agreed, it is the responsibility of the domain owner to report a spammer using his/her return address, but that's to assume he's aware of the spammer's actions. In this case, Juicylinks had at least an idea something was wrong because of the return emails. I would argue it is equally the responsibility of the registrar to contact the domain owner with a citation of the complaints to (a) make them aware of the complaints and the actions of the spammer and (b) give them an opportunity to defend themselves.

(5) "Go Daddy may also cancel the registration of a domain name, after thirty (30) days, if that name is being used in association with spam or morally objectionable activities." That's their reference to spam usage. A few weeks does not necessarily constitute 30 days. Juicy, how long ago did you first start receiving the return emails?

Ok goddady are a bunch of pricks

I am waitng for a cal from their "abuse" dept

I got nowhere with the queef on the phone

I know exactly what the root of this problem is , it seems you can fill out a abuse form on goddady and they will do this to you.

Its just a big headache tbh , i have galleries and free sites and other goodies on different domains so Ill lose some money but what can you do ? They got me by the balls

Lesson learned . I told the queef on the phone to call my host for verification that no spam was sent fromt he mail servers and that out of all my domains I have never logged a single spam report. But the queef on the phone had no idea what i was talking about cause i was getting technical with her.

I got queeffeeddddddddddddd

Great point!

The reason DirectNIC cannot charge less is we have 24/7 live customer support. It is expensive to staff customer support people 24/7 ( and to not have them in India!) We feel giving our customers top notch support is more important then saving a buck. We also do not play games. Most discount registrars play games. You will usually end up paying more, one way or the other.

Oh yeah, and one other thing:
(6) If godaddy is putting in a publically accessible database NS1.SUSPENDED-FOR.SPAM-AND-ABUSE.COM and there is no proof of such activities, you could argue that is defamation. All you would need to do if prove (a) you did not send the spam in question, which shouldn't be too tough and (b) they did not attempt to ascertain your guilt before making such a declaration, which is obvious. Then sue the heck out of the bastards.

Also, you said the returned emails came around the beginning of Jan. If you can document that they deactivated your domain before 30 days of that date, then you can argue breach of contract.
