well, I have been to Belgium a number of times and with an American accent and I will tell you this - they have been nicer to me as an American than even many of the British.

I had one lady on hearing my voice in a supermarket thank me for the war. Okay, so that was a bit strange and I am 26 years old and no more responsible for anything that happened in WW2 than a Brit my age is for anything that happened in the American Revolution. However, it was just an example of how the attitude in Belgium towards Americans is a million times away from that in France.

They go out of their way to speak English to you. The average lady behind a supermarket check out - outside of the tourist areas - speaks English to you. As opposed to the French where a group of us once walked into a restaurant in Calais (which is full of English speaking tourists) where when we entered the waitress was speaking English to another co-worker but once she heard us refused to take our order in English.

Next to France but a world away.
