:mad Why are all fat people at the store on food stamps?

I wish I could rack in as much soda, steaks, and Cookie Crisp as these douche bags in front of me at the store. $300+ grocery bills, filled with garbage... all on fucking FOOD STAMPS. I need to figure out a way to get in on this scam.

The amount of prepared and frozen food bought with food stamps/ebt cards is astounding. So is the amount spent on pizza's and fast food.

I agree with the principal that no one should go to bed hungry, but, the items being purchased are surprising. I would think bulk necessities not Burger King Whoppers.

That's exactly what I'm saying. These people aren't even buying bottom shelf brand shit. Not even middle shelf brands. Cream of the crop.

Either they are getting way too much money in order to "survive" or I'm missing out on the sales.

In my state you just need to earn less than $1200 a month if you're single. Then you qualify for $200 a month maximum in food stamps.

Yeah OK, well not to burst your accustomed bubble or anything.. but some of us who have been on food stamps have had family in the country since long before the program was passed in to law. Many hundreds or thousands of extended family plus ourselves paying into the program. So before I touch any of your precious money, first I need to run through my own then my families which isn't going to be anytime soon.

Naturally none of your family or friends will ever need assistance from now til infinity.

I watch them pay... they use a very distinguishable card

EDIT: Also, the cashier asks them before hand - these people also gets gallons of milk and pounds of cheese through WIC (Women, Infants and Children).

If you got it because you truly need it thats one thing. If you have it because your too lazy to get a job and support your family you can refer back to my previous post.

So you normally sit and watch people pay to check if they are on food stamps or not?

To be fair; it is hard to NOT notice. Especially if you are

People don't just get food stamps because they're too lazy to work. That's a political talking point and very little of those are very true. Are there exceptions? Yeah, naturally. There have also been monkey's and gorillas capable of sign language. It's just not normal.

In my area they busted 30 some people recently who were found to be defrauding the program and that took a year to uncover. So yes, there are abusers.

I was being evicted and about to live in a men's shelter, so yeah I needed it. I got $200 a month and spend only $150 a month on food, still. My EBT card now has about $500 on it that is still mine to spend until it's down to zero, that's just how it works.

The simple fact is that in NY state, if you earn less than 120% of poverty level, then you qualify for food stamps and you should be using them. All I sent them was some affiliate pay stubs plus my monthly expenses and they hooked me up within a few days. Hell, just APPLYING will get you a card in the mail and they adjust it later.

I do think the program needs some serious retooling, but I would never get rid of it, not ever. And trying to tell people something is more "healthy" is only going to get you sued when that person dies when you "told them it was healthy".. lawsuit city. But I would support plans like such and such percent should be fresh produce or meats and ban sodas etc. It would also be OK with me if they even had a simple approved list. Or support a coupon program. And make it easier to get off them too. They kept refilling my card for months after I told them I was making too much money. There should be a ramp up, and ramp down for food stamps.

Harmon: What are you talking about? I didn't edit that post. And yes I am passionate. Weird is as weird does my momma never said.

Yeah, you pretty much nailed it. It's a pretty regular question here... I am assuming the cashier has to hit a certain button or something in order to know what will be charged to their card or not. And yes, it catches my attention when these fat cunts already cut me off in their Hover Round are normally in the express land with 85 boxes of doughnuts and their assfat bulging out of the sides of the seat.

When i was younger we needed assistance too...father split took all our cash and thats just how things were. We needed it and the system worked. However, my post was clearly aimed at abusers...take a breather or something. No need to write a novel reply for something so basic.

I'm totally chill. It's a simple subject to talk about with pretty clear sides. There's been a push by right wing politics to demonize people on public assistance which is unfair since it's a tiny minority of abusers and a tremendously valuable program that actually helps people.

All you have to do to pay with the EBT card is hit EBT on the keypad and swipe the card. Everything labeled as "food" on the order will be paid by it. There are odd exceptions. Like when I bought whole flax seed (which requires processing before it's really edible) it was considered food, while ground flax seed (which is edible as-is) was considered a supplement. A bit backwards.

The cards vary by state but are pretty distinctive. I notice them all the time. What disturbs me is what is allowed to be purchased.

The Shell station where I get my gas has a sign that says "We accept EBT" Now honestly, who needs to subside someone buying $3.50 slices of pizza or other overpriced junk food?

Or a bucket of overpriced prepared KFC chicken vs cheap chicken from the supermarket?

Food stamp use is on the rise, so are the square footage of supermarket freezers for frozen prepared food. Not a coincidence.

.

It's OK, I write fairly quickly and like to leave a complete opinion on the rare occasion that I leave anything.

When I'm in line I always notice what the person in front of me is paying with. Not because I'm nosy or actually care, but because my face is not stuffed in a cell phone and I am an observant person that likes to watch the world around me.

Check, credit card, cash, coupons, food card? how do you not notice?

Maybe it's just me but I consider it incredibly rude to stare at someone paying to the point where I can identify the type of card they are using. That's almost as bad as looking over someone's shoulders to watch them enter their bank pin number. I know there are cultural differences but here in America if I feel someone is too close to me while I enter my bank PIN I won't hesitate to ask them to back off or at least give them a long dirty look.

Unless the card has some big red X or huge writing which says FOOD STAMPS it seems to me that if you can tell you are likely already looking for it and you know what you are looking for. The only way I have ever known that someone in front of me was using them was when either they or the cashier mentioned it and that has been extremely rare.

It's hardly staring and it's not even remotely close to looking over somebody's shoulder when they are typing in a pin number.

You are standing there waiting in line looking forward. The person in front of you is pulling out their wallet, their purse, their checkbook, whatever. You would need to purposely look away and close your eyes not to notice. Furthermore, you often hear the cashier say "I'm sorry ma'am, that cannot be purchased with your XYZ card." And that isn't eavesdropping, that is sitting there being a normal person standing 2 feet from another.

I also notice when the person in front of me is buying a beer that I like. Whoa!

i was in phoenix and some young family was buying using one of those EBT cards.. everyone knew about it, as the cashier had to help with what was acceptable and what wasn't

seemed like they were just buying staples, and the bread wasn't reading

didn't get why any of it was necessary

You would need to purposely look away and close your eyes not to notice. Furthermore, you often hear the cashier say "I'm sorry ma'am, that cannot be purchased with your XYZ card." And that isn't eavesdropping, that is sitting there being a normal person standing 2 feet from another.

I also notice when the person in front of me is buying a beer that I like. Whoa!
I live in the same state as Harmon and not a particularly wealthy area. The only way I've known that someone was on food stamps was when someone verbally mentioned it. This has probably happened less than 1% of the time and is rare.

I know I don't keep track of who is using American Express to pay versus Discover. It seems to me that it takes a certain type of person to sit there and stare and keep track of who is buying what and which card they are using to pay. I'm guessing the people who notice are probably already looking for political or some other reasons. I doubt normal people often do this. Myself I might notice if they use cash or credit but that's about it. And I'm certainly not making an effort to check if they are using food stamps and then to critique which items they buy. I mean do people who do this also check to see how many women in front of you are buying tampons too? I think it just shows you as a certain type of person to do this and to then make comments about it online.

I didn't realize you could buy fast food on food stamps. I know you can buy things like Papa Murphy's pizza because it is a take and bake thing, but I don't think you can buy already prepared food like KFC and Burger King.

That said, if you are on welfare I think they put cash on the food stamp card and you can use it like a debit card so you might be seeing people pay for this stuff with their welfare card.

The reason I say this is that about seven or eight years ago when my mom got really sick she ended up on disability and got medicare. The funny thing was that she was, at the the time, 64-years-old and unable to work and her only source of income was SSI yet she only qualified for $15 per month in food stamps. I was the one dealing with the paperwork and the caseworker ran through a list of things food stamps didn't buy and I could swear already prepared foods was on this.

On another note, there is no way to make everyone happy. If a person on food stamps buys junk food, candy, cookies, frozen pizza etc people will bitch that they shouldn't eat junk. If that same person bought a bunch of fresh fruit and veggies, boneless skinless chicken breasts, fresh foods and good/healthy stuff people would bitch that they shouldn't eat like kings.

I worked as a cashier when I was in high school and use to have to do food stamps as payment. I would see people mix in steaks sometimes, but they deserve have something more than ground beef too. What I don't agree with is the shit food but even more - the stuff you can't buy with food stamps. So a person would come through and have all their food they paid with stamps, then they would have another order consisting of: smokes, national enquirer type mags, alcohol, etc. THAT drove me nuts.

Exactly.. Most people who NEED them, shop sensible still, as if they were spending their own money. Most people are spending their own money, if you are only on assistance for a little bit, and not 18 years and then generation to generation.

I have been on them twice when on the job injuries have cut back my income.
I still bought most food I had to prepare, used coupons, and on sale items.

I do know many who abuse they system.

These posts are Never about the people who NEED them!

Yeah like kane said there's no way to please everyone.

Also, yep the same card is used (in my state anyway) for welfare benefits. Coming off EBT they told me to keep the card in case I need it in the future for any other benefits. I don't plan on needing it.. nobody in their right mind does, but as I found out you never know.

And also yes, I've bought all of my groceries on foodstamps and then bought some beer too, or some trash bags or light bulbs etc.. everything not approved out of my bank account, everything that is food on the EBT card. That's the way it is people, lol. Just remember, ALL of your families since the 1930's or so have paid into it if they were a citizen. They did it in case you needed it. Don't feel ashamed because someone else feels like it's their money.

WIC is completely different. The income level to apply for WIC is much higher and WIC is VERY strict with what you can buy and has a price limit.

You guys haven't seen anything in the US. We hand out welfare like candy in Canada. We actually pay women to have babies, every time they pop out another unwanted, un-parented little bastard they get more money.

Try going to a ghetto grocery store and getting mobbed by meth heads in the parking lot offering to pay for your groceries with food stamps in exchange for cash.

It saves money. $100 in groceries per $50.

But you have to go through the checkout with a jittery smelly meth head. Maybe not worth half off.

I was on food stamps for awhile. I never could spend all of them in a month. I ended up with a cabinet full of can food I could never eat.
