They banned the sale of fireworks in Australia unless you're a licensed pyrotechnics engineer because kids used to blow their hands off with them.

I remember as a 10 year old being able to go to our local milk bar and buy all the fireworks I wanted for about $5 (a milk bar is a corner store).

same in Canada, seems amazing to me now - little kids able to walk into any convenience store and buy explosives. kids would dare each other to let the firecracker go off between their thumb and index finger without letting go. then there was blowing up stuff, bottles, dollhouses, throwing them at dogs and cats - insane.

when i was a kid there was an older boy on my street, 12 or 13, had his blue jeans pockets stuffed with packs of firecrackers, i forget whether it was a cigarette ash or a firecracker but it set off what was in his pants. caused major burn/skin damage.

A guy lit off a 1/4 stick of dynamite about 20 yards away from me one time, it rearranged my internal organs for a while. Everything tasted better for the rest of that day for some reason. It was great.

A couple days ago 2 teens from the LA burbs were arrested for using roman candles as weapons. They set a 7 year old on fire. Banning and jailing violators is probably not a bad idea. Our neighborhood has been fireworking for 2 weeks now...
