HOUSTON (AP) ? A two-week-old Houston-area boy has died after being mauled by the family dog.

The incident happened Saturday night as the baby sat in an infant carrier on the floor of a room in the family house. Harris County sheriff's spokesman Thomas Gilliland says the dog, a Labrador mix, began sniffing the child and attacked him before the parents could pull it away.

The child was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died early Sunday. Animal control officers have taken custody of the dog for quarantine.

Excuse me, I have a lab MIX myself, so piss off. Labs are one of the best pets you could ever have.

Don't get pissed off at the dog, because the parents can't protect their kid, and more than likely, take care of their dog properly. There's no way my dog would just randomly maul a baby. Only way he'd ever maul someone is if he got extremely defensive and scared, but that's not going to happen with a 2yo baby. Blame the parents on this one.

Actually I think quite logically. I believe in using logic and reason and intelligence and discarding emotion. My Mensa level intelligence won't allow me to do it any other way. Any dog is capable of doing this. It is a fact of animal behaviour. Infantcide exists in plenty of species. People just choose to ignore this reality - especially people that treat their pets as equals in the home.

It is tragic but the fact that humanity has become so remote from this provincial wisdom is disturbing too imo because it just results in situations like these all too often.
