pictures from the Solvang motorcycle museum and motoGP race at laguna Seca [pics]

over the 4th of july weekend a few riding buddies and i took off for a weekend of motorcycling-

1st stop- solvang for a quick lunch and drinks

our appointment time was coming up so we walked across the street to the museum to begin our tour

up first is the 1962 CZ 320 DOHC, one of the most siginificant cafe racers in history

next, the harley-davidson vr1000, the superbike harley produced. 25 were made

if you saw the movie "the fastest indian" this is that bike, 1949 vincent black lightening

the owner also collected model cars, motorcycles and engines

1920 sopwith, by the makers of the sopwith camel

a suzuki rotary powered bike, suzuki bet their future on this bike and failed, they almost went under at that time

1952 mv 350, the 1st year for chain drive and telescopic forks

1957 maico typhoon- check the bodywork, and engine case, cast to blend into the tins

1945 125cc cz, these bikes became illegal to race due to crosswinds blowing them off the track

1932 brough superior, laurence of arabia was killed on the same bike.

early 1990s Britten, handmade of carbon fiber.

BMW r12, this bike was so reliable that the army had Harley-Davidson copy it

a couple pics from the races

the corkscrew- the most technical turn in motorsports. that's a 6 story drop!

Awesome man! I lived in Solvang from '88-'90, then 25 minutes away in Lompoc for 14 years. Those were my childhood stomping grounds.

hi, thx.

i wrote the wrong thing there, lol.

it is the bike rollie free rode in his speedo to set the world speed record
Quote:
In the late 1940s, American rider and former Indian racer Rollie Free had gained the World Speed Record for Unstreamlined Motorcycles at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA, on a modified Vincent. Famously, the last few mph had proven elusive until Free stripped down to his bathing trunks, whereupon he thundered through the traps at a mean magical two-way average speed of 150.31 mph.

Is there still that place called the Candy Barrel, right by IZOD, with a million oak barrels filled with candy?

When you're 5, that place is heaven!
