I've be using Wordpress SEO by Yoast on my blogs and I was wondering how important is that meta description field. Is it necessary to write a shorter description or is there a way to simply use the text in the actual post ??

What happens If I leave this field Empty?

If you put %%excerpt%% in the titles section of Yoast for post meta description it will use your post for meta information. I thought it did it automatically but apparently not.

I usually write a description my self for better targeting keywords. But I can see the use of having It update with posts.

I usually use the same one over and over on a post. Sometimes I might switch out some keywords but that's about it. I also make sure I max it out to the 141 chars. it allows. I do however change all the other stuff (focus keyword, title and meta keywords) with every post. Just my

What happens If I leave this field Empty?

Google will show the first bit on the page as the subtext.

Even with the description set it can still go and pick out a bit of the page that matches the search result too.

mine are all over the place with and without seo plugin
