I wouldn't say that created the demand for free porn. No one wants to pay for anything if they don't have to. Certain groups capitalized on this and created a way (tubes) to get a lot of traffic and sell them on different offers, like dating, cams, or just advertising space for example. Sadly, they did this by exploiting copyright loopholes and outright theft.

Fucking over customers may have made a few players some nice money, at the cost of the entire industry. High risk / adult processing is scrubbed so hard these days. Add to that many, legit customers, are added to blacklists / negative databases daily because they were practically FORCED to charge back at some point.

Either way, processing resources are going to run out eventually. More and more banks are simply going to block merchants that process high risk transactions (this is already happening), and ratios are just going to get worse as time goes by.

Yes, SITES that ripped people off with tons of hidden cross sales and banged their credit cards did cause miss trust with customers purchasing online.

Yes, When most people could find porn for free they stopped paying for it.

Both cases are independent of each other and neither have to do with greedy affiliates.


If you want to blame everything on one person or cause, blame cheap bandwidth. That is more of a cause for free porn than greedy affiliates. Free porn has always been around but it was only in the format that made it possible to exist financially. It was too expensive to host several minute long video clips on tgp sites back in the early 2000's. Even back in the late 90s if you had a lot of hi res images and you got slammed with TGP traffic you were making sure you made enough off of it to pay your hosting bill. As bandwidth prices tanked it made it possible for tube sites to give it all away for free and make money from the advertising.

I think it has less to do with affiliates promoting shady programs and more to do with the reality that the porn business is in a constant arms race with itself.

Here is what I mean:
First it was CJ sites and people decided if those worked then they could get more traffic and make more money by creating a legit link site.

The link site worked so someone decided they could get more traffic and make more money by linking right to galleries.

The TGP worked so someone decided they could get more traffic and make more money if they linked only to movie galleries.

The MGP worked so someone decided they could get more traffic and make more money if they had the actual movies on their site.

The tube site worked so someone decided they could get more traffic and make more money if they had actual full length movies on their site.

And so on and so on and so on. We don't actually revolutionize anything. We simply figure out how to give more free stuff away in an effort to draw more visitors to our websites.

So I don't think it was greedy affiliates promoting shady programs that did the damage. It was greedy affiliates that raced with each other to see who could give away the most porn and send the most traffic to the programs that caused the problem.

I have to bump this for the pictures alone. I was going to post a topic asking how many affiliate reps honestly are sure they will have a job three months from now but it seemed a little over the top. It's sad to see what this industry has become. Even looking around GFY you see the same people more and more and the numbers are dwindling fast. All the other forums are essentially dead. Crazy. Not to mention how many times I came across a program that was paying revshare or a modest PPS would have 2 or 3 cross sales, or later found out were banging people's cards. They were still make $150-$200 off of the initial month, not counting any rebills and only paying the affiliate a small part of that through revshare or about 1/2 of the first wave of charges through pps. Trust me, it is greedy/shaddy company owners that fucked it up if anyone.
