the only way to really use this domain, is something not for UFC, which defeats the purpose of the name, you could not put anything at all about fights, or UFC to not get the domain taken.

Running a site like ufcblog.com puts you in a territory called "Nominative Fair Use." This means you are allowed to use a trademarked name to refer to the actual brand (you can't talk about the UFC without saying "UFC"), but you must avoid making it look like the site is owned or endorsed by the UFC. Since the UFC is notoriously aggressive with its intellectual property (Zuffa, LLC), here is a breakdown of what you can and cannot use. 1. What You CAN Use (The "Green Light") You have a right to "Fair Use" for the purposes of news reporting, commentary, and criticism. The Name "UFC": You can use the text "UFC" in your articles, headlines, and domain name, provided it is descriptive (e.g., "UFC 300 Results" or "My UFC Blog"). Fighter Likenesses (with Caution): You can discuss fighters, their stats, and their history. Factual Data: Results, betting odds, fight cards, and weight-in numbers are public facts and cannot be copyrighted. Embedded Social Media: Embedding an official UFC tweet or Instagram post is generally safer than uploading a screenshot because the content remains hosted on the original platform. 2. What You CANNOT Use (The "Danger Zone") The UFC frequently issues DMCA takedowns and "Cease and Desist" letters for these items: The Official Logo: Do not use the iconic "UFC" logo (the specific font/graphic) as your site's primary header. Create your own original logo for your blog. Fight Footage/GIFs: This is the most common reason for legal action. The UFC owns the copyright to the broadcast. Even a 5-second GIF of a knockout can get your site flagged or de-indexed by Google. Official Photography: You cannot grab photos from UFC.com or their Getty Images feed. Use "Creative Commons" images or, better yet, photos you have taken yourself. Pay-Per-View Names/Graphics: Avoid using official PPV posters or graphics that imply you are an official broadcast partner. 3. Best Practices for Your Blog To minimize the risk of a lawsuit or a forced domain transfer (UDRP), follow these steps: |
