What is the best way to compress a jpg file

Any compression proggie will do. Depending on the quality, you can go anywhere from 20% to the standard 88%. I have good luck with 60% and a smoothness of 2, progressive optimization. But as I said it completely depends on the quality of the original.

Look at PS 6's upgrade and see if it will upgrade from Image Ready 1.0 like the 5.5 PS did. If it will, you can buy the IR-1.0 for like 100-125 and then the PS upgrade for alot less than the full version. We did it with Photoshop 5.5 and saved 150 bucks!

There is a great plug-in for photo shop 6 called Box Top Pro (not shure if it works for 5, because I have 6) Once installed, it will become your default "saver."

I usually size my images with the largest dimension 400 - 425 pixels. Then with box top pro, it saves them around 21K

The pics have pretty good quality with this.
This is an example of a pic I did with that. Original was probably 700 - 1000 pixels at its widest, over 100K in size.

I recommend Adobe Photoshop.

I am sure other programs do it - but photoshop allows you to see the result and the image size as you change the type of file (jpg, gif, png) and the quality.

the best thing to do is to get an office job, snag a license for photoshop and make sure the company never uses it again.. that way, it's free for you, and not illegal (according to Adobe)... your company may have a different view on things.. or bitch and complain about needing photoshop, unistall it at work, a use that S/N at home... i durnk
