I'm taking a break from GFY
 

1. The fruitcakes I can stand - mildly entertaining even.

2. The intellectual people I can argue with - what I love about GFY cos it's full of them.

3. The pig ignorant trolls I can manage (noone is on my ignore list)

It's those that are mix of 2 and 3 that are dangerous - are not stupid, but a troll at the same time. OK, I've learned to semi-engage.

The lurkers I despise - they are the most dangerous.

I'm sure the "debate" (is that even possible on GFY?) on IP address badgering will continue in infinite concentric circles just as I'm sure the majority will still offer their content up for pirating (and then complain it is pirated).

Things have changed a lot for me recently and GFY can no longer take a place in my heart for goofing around. I'll still carry on coding and doing stuff for people - don't worry on that.

Just stuff has gotten too personal on GFY so I would like this to die down. I'm still doing my own thing to help people detect their copyrighted works (I love that challenge, so that will not end) and something is close like 1-2 months from a solid app you can all use.

It's just this goofing around has gotten out of hand and the personal attacking emails I can do without. It's coming up to Christmas, which is where I wind down anyway to spend a few weeks in the mountains with my family, so I'm going to just bow out of GFY now and come back when I have something more useful on the plate (which will probably come under a new nick).

There are far too many armchair warriors out there and given public info and shit, I never protected myself enough.

I wish you all well in your continued battles and throw a jab in now and then from me. I will be back, just not in the next few months - things on the table are far more important.

Write anything you want and I will be glad to read responses. Right now I am not getting enough spam, anyway. I thought that it's easy and fast to sort through relevant and irrelevant messages.

Reasoning for those not in the know - I recently received "threatening emails" the threat being an attached image of a recent google streetcam view of me and my daughter (5yo) picking up leaves outside the house. The threat email simply said:

My daughter was the only one looking directly at the big monstrosity of a camera.

So, lesson learned with DN privacy, so I'll bow out for a bit. Some serious fucked up weirdos here - and that is the truth.

I made a request to google for the image to be removed, with the email that was sent to me, and it disappeared within 24 hours of the request. No email confirmation no nothing.

There are some real scumbags here and probably in high places. Did you report it to the police? If it were I, I'd probably do the opposite and hit up my local media and whoever else would listen about it too. It's a lot harder to fuck with you when people are watching. Such people tend not to want attention. Then again I don't have kids and I don't blame you. :(

I've never understood why, on a board like this, one would be so open about their biz, life etc when it's clearly filled with people that have no qualms about fucking you over given the chance. Those that need to know who you are etc. are the only ones that should get that info.

I have pretty much followed those rules...but still got a threatening phone call from some asshole on this board...and I immediately changed my phone number. I also had my server hacked and my suspicion level is high that it was someone from this board. Even yet I am pressed to reveal my sites and identify myself even though I have said no...a thousand times no.

Thanks for the kind words guys - this will be my last post for a few months. Like supz said, I'll be forgotten cos I've seen this happen many times on GFY before - I won't leave forever cos I love this place too much and my persona is just a drop in the GFY ocean!

However, I do agree with you all that this is just fucked up - Eric has the email headers to see if poss anyone here lights up (but it was sent from a blackberry using an anon email service). GFY no doubt cos the reply address was gfy. Lurker no idea BB, but I just assumed cos noone has ever engaged me in threads at all... I just assumed.

We were moving house anyway so this is the perfect time to scratch a fresh online persona.


Seems like a good time to sell also. We were already in the pool of selling house, so why not amalgamate everything and sell domains too. geoPlugin . com most here know I run - I have a valid letter here from Google that is 4 months old with an offer to buy the site (they used the webservice for Google Wave which is clearly viewable in their code) that I refused - I'm prepared to let this non-profit site go now. I will send google's offer letter to serious buyers, but you have to "easily" match it... this is a non-profit site but what do 5-7 million hits (2-4mill javascript) hits mean to you?
