I want to activate the power of a GPS tracker as soon as the product it is hidden in is picked up. Basically I am trying to save power until the bugged product actually moves.

The best I figured out so far was to have a magnetic switch at the bottom of the products box and a magnet tapped under the table it will be on (normally closed) so when the switch isn't magnetized, the battery is connected to the GPS unit thus turning it on. This could be a problem because the target is likely to open the box.

I am basically wondering if there is any sort of switch that once it detects movement and stays on even when the movement stops (once its activated by tilting or what not) it stays on. That way everything include the switch can be hidden inside of the electronic shell that the target is obviously not going to open.

this sounds like something that might be more easily achieved with some kind of mechanical solution, rather than electronic. try to think of some way to keep two wires or contacts separated by something that will move and stay out of the way easily when the object moves the first time, maybe just simply using gravity to help out, that's probably the easiest way to solve it

I'm sure you could come up with an electronic solution using a mercury switch and a 555 timer and some circuitry if you wanted to get fancy, too

Yah im just wondering if something already exists. I don't have a lot of space to work with. The mercury thing can probably work on an active circuit but basically my main goal is not to drain the batteries until the product is moved. A mercury circuit to do that probably will need some power.

hardwire in bigger power, you should get a months worth in pretty small,comes with 5 days life on stock battery

actually scratch that, the mercury movement can activate the circuit which will know not to shut down, hmmm. I guess I can do that but if something already exists it would make things a lot easier.

Yah I guess i can just connect as many batteries as I can in series and just charge them every week or two if I have to. Would prefer to have something maintenance free though. But then again batteries drain themselves overtime anyways.

the mercury switch uses no power, it's just a movement switch

all you need to do is have an open circuit that ca be easily closed. think back to like elementary school science class, or your most recent terror training camp and imagine those clothespin switches. you know, a couple thumbtacks poked into the inside grips of a wooden clothespin, stick piece of cardboard in between them, when you pull it out your lightbulb comes on, the gps is activated, or the package explodes. apply that premise....

the circuit I posted could be adapted to be very small using a very small relay and less power required, could probably squeeze it into the size of a stack of a few 25c quarters I think

cool thanks, one last electronics question, do motion sensors need a direct line of site to work or can they be hidden behind a cardboard box or wall even and still work?

kinda depends how your using it , motion detection itself doesnt need line of site, they have mcdonalds kids toys that make noises when you shake them, basic idea is disable speaker , turn into on switch

cheapest method would be buy a cheap digital alarm clock , disable speaker , wire into small gps unit, thus it will turn on the power for the gps unit for a minute or 2 every day at desired time , saving shitloads of power

Just wire off a switched 12v source like an ignition key or something that gets its power when the car/vehicle is activated when the key turns. You can grab it from the fuse box or the actual ignition harness under the steering column.


I use this company pictured above and wired in the GPS myself. Its very easy, just use a hid-away key case and you can set it up where ever you want. Make sure to make the connections and crimps BEFORE you get under the car, my retard worker was trying to wire it while measuring under the truck.

You are most likely planning a felony. since you are inexperienced, you are likely to get caught. This is the kind of thing where a PI can be a better choice than the attorney you're about to need. I can recommend someone in your area.

Btw we use a gps tracker in maybe one case out of a hundred. 99% of the time it's not the best approach. Partly that's due to laws, but even without laws real investigators would rarely use them, not all the time like TV.
