Sign of the times in adult - domain sales

So once again, things rolling like usual...in mainstream, released a new sale of $99 domains late last night and sold 34 of them this morning, and in adult, slash prices yesterday on nearly everything with jack squat to show for it. Fucking Epass really killed things...good grief. Even just 2 years ago I was selling domains regularly here at 3 times the prices I'm seeking now for them. :(

People just think twice before buying anything these days, not just in adult.

I got an email from a guy yesterday offering me a very lame domain for $3,500. I told him I would give him $35 which was a joke saying that I would pay him the Register.com price. He wrote back the next day saying that he would consider it :1orglaugh

I never got into the domains game so I obviously don't understand it, but I hope that bubble is finally bursting. I'm sick of seeing good domain names sitting on parked "for sale" pages generating zero money/traffic.

There was a time when parking would generate revenue for a significant enough percentage of domains that even trying to register expired domains with traffic made sense. Not anymore...parking pays absolute shit. That combined with domain market being down overall and a lot of pretty decent names get dropped and not immediately snapped up these days.

the squatting business model's bubble has burst... and did so a while ago.

with the drop in sales, rise of tube sites and the economy having everyone frantic, no one is going to be forking out $100+ for a domain in the hopes they will make that money back in a few days.

IMO, your better off to try and sell those for 10x what your asking for and find some moron with a bank roll looking to try and make an investment.

about a year or so ago i sent an email to someone looking to buy a domain from them. gave them a reasonable price and they came back over 10x more. i replied with "lol good luck"

few months ago I got an email saying hes made his fortunes and how just getting rid of domains to move on and said he would sell it to me for 2x what i offered... since then hes been emailing me, to the point of begging me to buy it. right now we are just over 50% what I offered him, but considering it more and more I really dont have a use for it anymore :1orglaugh

I'd rather someone just buy the whole fucking lot of them and be done with it. Besides, I've found that the guys with a lot of money in this biz spend it on better names than what I've got - basically the kinds of high end names that Evan moves. I used to have such a buyer and sold nearly $100k of domains to him, but eventually he decided to stop buying in general.

Ouch...safe to say the guy handed over the position of power gift-wrapped. There's a lot of domainers resorting to that now. I've never gone back and accept someone's offer if it was way off what I was expecting after initially turning it down. IMO that's sign of a weak domainer that probably doesn't have the confidence/skills to do this for a living.

BTW, now am up to 53 mainstream domains sold today, still zilch on adult side. Adult used to be a significant portion of my income despite it always being only about 10-15% of my portfolio.

where are you selling 53 mainstream domains for 100 bucks each in a day? domain forums are lucky to see that many sales over the course of a few days in total.

Now 54, looking to be possibly 60 or more from the looks of it. Bear in mind between bulk discounts given and payment fees, avg per name has been close to $80 vs. $100. Still though, a month's worth of bills in a day isn't too shabby. I don't typically sell this many in a day, but I also may periodically get a good chunk of what I made today in selling 1 or 2 domains for a lot vs. this many for a little.

Anyways, I'd attribute 80% of it to the quality of the domains I get in the first place, about 15% to longevity in this biz (closing in on 7 years) and having had a lot of buyers I can tap into for more sales, and the remaining 5% are the efforts spent. That said, 14 domains were sold to a forumer and another 6 may soon be sold to another forumer, both of whom I never dealt with before, so while I'd normally agree with you on the forums, this was a rare day when they've been fruitful.

It has been shit for atleast 2-3 yrs now. Only high premium names are selling for what they should be.

lazycash 11-23-2010 05:07 PM

Where are you listing your mainstream domains at?

Haha, reminds me of Simonsynister aka Sologirlcontent who told gfy earlier this year he was retiring and that gfy was all a bunch of idiots, and once again today he's posting his blowout sales thread trying to sell the same content for the 20th time.

Domain sales are up and down.

Now is the time to buy - some good deals out there...

Nicky 11-23-2010 05:13 PM

It's been pretty bad for some time now, way before epass too, but It sure didn't help for moving $xx-xxx domains.

Hentaikid 11-23-2010 05:37 PM

I'm glad the parking pages thing is dying, I hate parked domains.

Marketplacewise, I list at Afternic, Sedo, and either Fabulous's DDN or GoDaddy's premium listings depending on where I have it regged. Domain forums I list on are primarily the big 3 (NP/DNF/DP) though Acorn seems an interesting place that I might try more at, and occasionally like with adult names here, I post gambling domains at some of the gambling industry forums. I also do some occasional social media posting through the big 3 (FB/Tw/LI) with LI bringing far more biz than the other 2. As for the special sales I run, those are all on Domainate.com and just promoted to my contacts and on forums et al (the "Thanksgiving/Black Friday" sale launched last night is here). Additionally I post special deals at DailyDomainNames.com. I'm developing a more thorough site at the moment on Domainate, so the front page is pretty much just a sign-up form for newsletter and info on what we do.

Honestly I'm usually a little lazy with things. Like I actually haven't really hit LI up much in the past few weeks and sometimes I wind up being weeks behind on listing new gets. Right now though, the $100 price point has been where things have been happening, so these special sales have accounted for a lot of activity lately. I also put up "for sale" pages on most of my domains vs. parking, which has actually led to a lot of sales even vs. parking pages with "for sale" areas on them.

Ultimately, I'm not going hungry, but sales take a lot more effort these days for a lot less than they used to be.
