the image doesnt show the speed - hes flying very fast.... not sure it would be survivable if he didn't have the speed to make it out of the impact zone.

how deep would the water be right there once the wave is down, and how close to the bottom is he at that moment?

That's pretty sick, surfing a wave like that has got to be an indescribable adrenaline rush.

for a wave to suck out like that its less than half the wave height - I would guess about 8-12 feet - which is near dry

so the big danger in a wipeout would be hitting the bottom?

No - hitting the bottom is less likely than the water mass snapping you like a twig. Or not being able to make it to air in time... Although hitting the bottom is also a major danger.

Amazingly, the man is pushed by the huge wave. You would not understand the wave from a close-up. You have to watch it from dozens of feet away.

By then I'm sure they'll have a wheelchair friendly surfboard. I know I'm looking forward to it too.

For those that have a hard time grasping what's going on, here's a video of some big wave surfing. The first ride in the video is the same break as the picture above. I can't think of any other sport that compares to this except maybe those guys that base jump in those glider suits and fly/free fall along side of the mountains. :)

That's a pretty famous pic in the surfing community. NOTHING was done to alter the content of that picture. That wave breaks like that and people surf it as you can see in the video I posted above. Any PS done would be of the resizing, color correction, sharpening, dodging type stuff.
