is NASA smarter than a 13-year old German School Boy?

Quote:

NASA has been forced to check its math after a 13-year-old German boy wrote to tell them their calculations for the probability of an asteroid hitting earth were incorrect. Agency bosses had predicted a one-in-45,000 chance of an interstellar object bringing an end to life as we know it; that was until teen Nico Marquardt told them that the figure was closer to one in 450.
doomed indeed.

Germans don't need NASA, they've got ESA already

Tom_PM 11-10-2010 11:22 AM

NASA would be nothing without captured Germans anyway, lol. Is that irony? I think it's just a fun fact.

minicivan 11-10-2010 11:24 AM

If it was an Asian kid that wrote NASA, I would be more worried.

Brujah 11-10-2010 11:32 AM

I can't wait until they finally abolish the US Dept of Education.

haha curious

Cyber Fucker 11-10-2010 12:13 PM

Quite interesting... well, 19 years left to the possible impact, I'm not sure if mankind will last that long.

That would save a few billion

PR_Glen 11-10-2010 12:29 PM

Lets here what 13 year olds have to say about it.

ok, so wait a minute - nasa said we had a 1:45,000 chance of being splatted and whiped out...

AND NOBODY BATTED AN EYLID???

and people play the lotto in the hope of becoming rich????

1:45000 chance the human race is whiped out, and it only becomes news cos some teen whip says it's more like 1:450....

No matter which one is right, they are still fucking risky odds of wiping out everything!!

correct :)

also there is a slight chance it will pass through a certain path, and go through the keyhole, and then be sent out on an orbit that brings it rightback to us 7 years later

ah fuck that then - I'm off GFY for good... so for every 12.5 hours I waste on GFY, I risk being blown off the planet by an asteroid???

I'm off to enjoy myself - this life shit is too risky to be fucking around on GFY :helpme

HomerSimpson 11-10-2010 02:28 PM

the kid is
a. smart (+ has world know German precision)
b. attention whore

Dirty Dane 11-10-2010 02:35 PM

Not surprised. Child labor is common within NASA.

_Richard_ 11-10-2010 02:41 PM

NASA is German already. All so-called "US-space program" was founded and directed by the German SS officer Werner Von Braun and his Nazi gang. Everything the US did in space (excluding later Challenger and Columbia failures) were done by a group of Nazi SS officers. Even a first man on the Moon was sent there by German Nazi's. There is no such a thing as a NATIONAL US space program, because it was managed by other nation. The nation of German SS officers.

Should the average American people be proud for their space program and NASA? I don't think so. :2 cents:

yea right, and the 32 canadian scientists had nothing to do with any of the successes with the lunar mission and beyond

do they still air communist propaganda? i thought it stopped long ago

The asteroid will be closer to earth on its initial pass than some of our satellites. I guess the major concern is what will happen after the Sun's gravity whips it back in our direction for its return pass.

Two headlines from Discovery Channel News:

Don't Be Subtle, Nuke That Asteroid : Discovery News - LINK. Another Good Reason Not to Shoot Nukes at Asteroids : Discovery News - LINK

I hope nobody here actually gets their space science news from a cable TV network not named NASA.

A near Earth object passed between the Earth and the Moon last night, btw. It wasn't very big. No boom. No worries.

Davy 11-10-2010 03:12 PM

1:450 chance when? Tomorrow? Over a year? Over thousand years? Over mankind's existence?

TeenCat 11-10-2010 03:19 PM

mom, look, nasa

Cash4Me 11-10-2010 03:31 PM

What does it mean 1:450?
The last life ending event happened (maybe!!!) 65 millions years ago.

John-ACWM 11-10-2010 03:55 PM

Reminded me of 'Little man tate'.

Phoenix 11-10-2010 04:02 PM

you know what is cool...we actually studied the type of equations for these sort of calculations in 3rd or 4th year..wish i could remember it..lol
