R.I.P Andy Irons 3X Surfing World champion

Just found out that Andy Irons has passed away at the age of 32.

He was at a Surf contest in Puerto Rico and dropped out because of Flu like symptoms which some are speculating was actually Dengue Fever but hasn't been confirmed. He left PR for his home in Hawaii and died in route.

I know there are a few surfers here that will know who Andy Irons is and for those who don't, he was an amazing surfer, three time world champion and considered to be one of the best ever. What makes this so hard to grasp is he surfed the most dangerous waves on the planet often finding himself in death defying situations yet was taken from this earth by a quick illness.

R.I.P Andy

" Sad news has made its way into the Surfer offices this afternoon as we?re hearing confirmed reports that 3X World Champion Andy Irons has passed away.

At this time the cause of death is unknown, although sources inside the family say that he passed away en route from the World Tour event in Puerto Rico to his home in Hawaii. The 32 year-old-hawaiian was deemed too ill to travel on his connecting flight from Texas to Hawaii and was grounded there. Unconfirmed reports say that he passed away in his Dallas hotel room."

Now it appears that his death is being investigated as a possible drug overdose. :Oh crap

" The death of three-time world surfing champion Andy Irons was being investigated as a possible methadone overdose, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Tuesday.

Irons, 32, died Tuesday in a Texas hotel room during a layover on his way home to Hawaii from a tournament in the Caribbean. He withdrew from the Rip Curl Pro Search event in Puerto Rico earlier this week, citing illness, and early reports suggested he may have been suffering from the viral illness dengue fever.

Local officials said the cause of death was not immediately known, but The Star-Advertiser reported it was a being investigated as a possible overdose, citing information provided by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.

The examiner's office said a container of the prescription drug zolpidem was found on the nightstand in Irons' hotel room and that methadone was found inside it. Zolpidem is commonly used for insomnia. A number of other drugs also reportedly were found on the nightstand.

An autopsy was set to take place Wednesday, but the exact cause of death would not be known for 60 to 90 days if a toxicology test is required. "
