CDN experiences

I am currently testing a CDN. It is one of the big ones.

What I noticed is that no-cache headers are being sent by the CDN.
I find that highly annoying.

The bandwidth is not cheap. I'll need about 5 mbps to serve ads. It would cost me $120 dollar a month to serve those ads from the CDN.

For that kind of money, I could get a dedicated ad server with 10mbps. :disgust
And I could even save bandwidth if the right headers are used.
I guess I'll only use the CDN for small files and keep serving those ads from my own server.

Anybody using CDNs? Anybody else annoyed that CDNs send no-cache headers?

With Amazon I'm pritty sure you can turn no-cache on or off.

scouser 10-28-2010 04:44 AM

do amazon allow adult content?

Amazon is more than twice as expensive as the one I am using. Plus you can't do streaming if you wanted to.
Last time I had a look at amazon, you had to use a set of command line java tools to work with it. That was years ago, but I doubt they have improved on it. So much for easiness of use.

Usually CDNs allow you to set your own cache expiry...

Also your statement about, "for that kind of money" doesn't really make any sense as a CDN is vastly superior to a single dedicated box; that's the point of it :P

Yes, as long as its legal.

JOELK 10-28-2010 07:21 AM

We use a CDN and it works great even for the price it allows a better user experience.

Si 10-28-2010 07:27 AM

What one are you using?

I was looking at this https://www.vps.net/cdn-signup

It depends. My server sits in the US. I am in Europe.
I compared the CDN with the server and could not find any difference.
Since the majority of my traffic is US, a CDN is not important. Especially if they don't set an expires header.

Yes, VPS.net is what I am testing. But they are just a reseller of highwinds.

Anybody know how I can set up origin pull in the StrikeTracker?
All I get is either "origin pull options are not currently configurable for this product" or "origin pull options are not currently configurable for folders below the root".
I know I can tell VPS to set this up, but I wonder if it can be done from the panel.

True enough, I'd probably look for a CDN that had nodes in Europe as well as the US if you serve a lot of EU traffic :P

Yep. If you're going to spend the money make sure they have good coverage in Europe.

codingainteasy 10-28-2010 03:48 PM

you should be just fine with AWS. To enable global coverage enable CloudFront and your content will be distributed. you can set any metadata right through the AWS console, so yes all those options are there. and if you're worried about adult content on amazon, just look at how much is on Tumblr ;)

if you want to rely on actual cached CDN files, you can also go with the rackcloud and their cloudfiles system. super easy to apply a TTL for anything. You also have to remember that with that $150, your ads will probably load faster than the others and potentially bring in more sales. people tend to underestimate the power of CDN served media when it comes to user experience.

If there were moderators on this forum, you would so get your ass banned.
Lucky you!

I wasn't impressed with HighWinds. When I looked at them they were using HTTP redirects to geo-direct users to the closest pop to deliver the content, rather than a lower-level, DNS-based solution.
