China halts rare-earth shipments to USA

Quote:

A nasty trade dispute appears to have prompted Chinese customs officials to block shipments of rare earth minerals to the U.S.

The move underscores a deepening U.S. vulnerability because of its dependence upon China for tech-crucial rare earth minerals (also known as rare earth elements). Small but significant amounts of the minerals go into creating everything from PCs and cellphones to wind turbines and hybrid cars, as well as U.S. military technologies such as missile guidance systems.

This latest news came from three rare earth industry officials cited by the New York Times. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of backlash from China.

China currently controls about 97 percent of rare earth production, and has the only facilities capable of processing rare earth minerals after they have been mined. Rare earth minerals are not exactly rare, but the mining and refining processes can be costly and time-consuming.

We will have to find some new sources in the Andes; or, we will have KFC will turn off the fucking fried chicken.

This is going over people's head for sure.

It's time to wake up; the "most powerful nation" in the world is increasingly
needing to form equal partnerships.

Nobody is scared of America anymore.
Politicians that think we can bully other nations need to open their eyes.
That shit ain't working.

We spent a trillion dollars in two wars and 5-6 years from now everything we claimed
to have accomplished in Afghanistan and Iraq will have been completely dismantled.

china is not a 3rd world country, they are a superpower...

corporate greed has debilitated the US power brokering with china...

if we dont wake up soon and start negotiating better deals, the future of the US will be learning to speak chinese... :2 cents:

"China currently controls about 97 percent of rare earth production" - this is interesting. The number is larger than I thought. Not only that, China has metal secrets that few people know. China has ancient swords and metals with powerful abilities.

I was just in Shanghai last May for the opening of the World Expo. Just about every country in the world was there kow-towing to China. Shanghai is awesome and it changed my view of how we live here. They opened 5 subway lines on the same day and all worked flawlessly. We can't get a train to run part-time on existing tracks in Austin.

tical 10-19-2010 08:54 PM

Isn't that why we're in Afghanistan?

regardless of how fucked up they are, they are definitely on the path that the US was after world war 2...

the thing i have always admired about china is that they think in terms of thousands of years and the US cant seem to think past next week...
