How do you measure how fast facebook moves?
Doesn't it also depend on the number of friends you have on facebook?

yes, however.... that is matched by the number of "friends" you consider yourself to have on GFY. I have a fairly equal number on both, (calculated in my head), and so have determined that the result is justified, true & accurate.

Just as people in commute traffic can't help but gawk at a wreck, facebook is nice for keeping in touch with family & friends, but GFY simply moves faster.

dyna mo 10-18-2010 08:20 AM

officer, could you please move the bodies closer? i can't see them from my luxury car.

Agent 488 10-18-2010 08:23 AM

i don't think you know how facebook works. maybe pick up facebook for dummies or something.

Amputate Your Head 10-18-2010 08:23 AM

also, a lot of Facebook "friends" are people I (and you) haven't seen in over 25 years, didn't know that well to begin with in the first place, and friends of theirs you have never met and aren't in a rush to ever meet.. basically the home version of GFY.

oh i get it bro. but i'm not into maintaining multiple logins.

quiet 10-18-2010 09:42 AM

i refused to make a facebook account for years. but i finally caved, and i don't see much similarity between the two (no offense amp). facebook is a positive place where you can share bits of your life, etc. gfy is a cesspool of nastiness and hatred. not that there's anything wrong with that lol.

yep, two sides of the coin bro.

dyna mo 10-18-2010 09:47 AM

i signed up to the facebook for biz purposes (social marketing) only. seems to be working. will be ramping up now to try and maximize the virtual word of mouth of the fb.

Tom_PM 10-18-2010 09:49 AM

I still dont know why facebook shows me comments of people who I have not approved as friends yet. I logged in today to answer last weeks birthday wish from one of my brothers, and the page is filled with bullshit from people I have NOT approved as friends yet.

i did just the opposite, i signed up to keep in touch with family & friends only, no business at all.

i go with the face to face for that. 2nd- phone. i really don't want the hassle of dealign with the high school knuckleheads that i wasn't friends with anyway contacting me on the fb for a virtual high five.

Possibly they are friends of your friends? They started doing that fairly recently and it can be a bit annoying, I agree. However, I am largely with quiet on that Facebook is just a different feel than GFY even though both are enjoyable at times.

Tom_PM 10-18-2010 10:03 AM

Yes, a couple of them could easily be friends of one of my brothers. But why, when I log into MY account, is the area (wall?) filled with comments from them to other people (not even comments to me)? It seems like complete nonsense.

It's forcing me to go DECLINE them to prevent this, isn't it? sigh wtf

yeah... i hear ya home skillet. but my family is so spread out, face-to-face doesn't really work very well for me in real life. even my kids are in separate states.

Sarah_Jayne 10-18-2010 10:05 AM

No, I think that is what I was talking about. They have decided that people might be interested in threads their friends responded to even though they aren't friends with the other people. Chances are somebody else on your list commented in those threads? I agree it wasn't a necessary feature.

quiet 10-18-2010 10:07 AM

go into account -> privacy settings -> customize settings (at the bottom of the page).

me, i just don't give a shit who posts on my wall or whatever.

i guess for me it's a privacy thing. from what i can tell there is only one level of access. adding someone as a friend opens all the doors. that's a little bothering to me. i don't necessarily want business folks having access to my family.

i believe you can group people ie: friend group, family group, biz group, etc. i have never looked into it, but i'm sure i could figure it out quickly if i had a reason.

I've seen some trolling and out of left field rants on Facebook that put most of what goes on here to shame.

Have they said "go" on the easter egg hunt to find the opt-out button yet? :2 cents:

weird. i've never seen a single argument ever, other than some of the forum stuff. my friends are all friends. the worst i can think of is the odd break up, or bitching about kids. myself, never had an argument with anyone, ever.

Tom_PM 10-18-2010 10:15 AM

Thats cool, quiet, thanks. Will go check for it.

I mean, I dont want to slam a door on these people, but I just dont know if I want ex girlfriends w/boyfriends, plus aunts and uncles all glommed together at my fingertips.

good point. there are some odd breakups going on right now, but no one is trashing anyone.

If you start adding/following groups/people/products/business you get this all the time. When you start doing that, Facebook becomes a lot more like this place.

We volunteer/support a local animal rescue. The constant bickering, infighting and backstabbing that goes on with the local animal rescue people (namely, your typical "cat lady") is crazy and comical.

originally mine was family stuff as well, but it turned out to be mostly business, so i removed family..... dont really care for it much, hardly ever on there:2 cents:

Sarah_Jayne 10-18-2010 10:35 AM

I still have only a very few business people on my account and only those I trust enough to not flash their bits at my mom.

That, plus I support the use of filtered messages.

A recipe site I belong to purely as entrainment, made some changes to their site and the nastiness that spilled forth on Facebook was worse than most things I have ever seen on GFY. All of which was mostly coming from Sunday school teacher type middle aged women.

Same "type" of crowd, to a tee.

I tried to get involved for a moment but then my head hurt too much. The site went from a fairly bland name (but which had been around for a long time) to food.com and these old women bitch non-stop that food.com is a worse domain. I tried to explain domains to them but then I thought my head would explode and walked away. My favourite argument was that domains didn't matter because every site that goes online makes money every time somebody loads the page. I wish.
