Any SETI AT HOME / Boink Users out there?
Just curious if there are any adult webmasters out there who donate CPU time to projects such as Seti at home (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/) ?
Just a quick FYI, Don't run their software if you use an iMac. I use to let their software run on a few old PC's I had years ago and thought I would fire it up for use on my iMac. Less than 5 minutes into it, my machine was COOKING it was so damn hot. I didn't notice that the fans had kicked into overdrive trying to keep it cool because I had headphones on. Sure enough the CPU temp was sky-high and the GPU temperature was climbing fast too. I googled it and found that the temperature was still well within tolerance and wouldn't have fried anything, but I'm pretty sure running this software would lessen the life of my computer. WTF, Seti? Geezuz... It doesn't get close to this hot playing Flight Simulator. Anyway I killed the software and ran fan control for a few minutes to cool my machine down. |
I used to run SETI and some other one to help sift cancer data. I can't remember the cancer data one, but I'd run it again.

I use to run SETI like 12 years ago.

World community grid is a much more worthy cause. SETI is just a waste of processing power.

Did they find alien life yet?

I've been running WCG for years, you have to be careful with old or crappy computers running boinc, they tend to get very hot at 100% CPU usage.
|
I'm surprised no one has come up with a paid version, many corporations need super computers too, they could get virtually unlimited computing power at a fraction of the cost of building their own system...

Check out this thread guys http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=973982
Oh yeah, if your Mac isn't working fine, you haven't set up stuff ok, or it sux. I've been running BOINC for a years now and no side effects except a bit more heating in the summer and wasting more electrical energy. I'm still running WCG projects :) |
Same here.

#1 killer of electronics - heat.
I always enjoyed running a chess server more than contributing cycles.. I could actually watch it play grandmasters and other engines. Was fun, I ran "Christine(C)" on Chess.net for years. I may set up one again actually if I can get permission on ICC, I enjoyed playing around with that. I wonder what kind of rating Crafty would get on a $20 VPS nowadays |
