Gmail account hacked

Today when I went to check into gmail it said my account had been placed on limited access and I had to verify by cell phone, due to suspicious activity in my account.

Sure enough, someone had hacked in and sent a spam message to everyone on my contact list, although it had bounced back as undeliverable. It appeared in my sent messages folder. They were spamming an url, but I never clicked it as who knows what the site would have contained.

Ever had this happen? I thought my password was fairly secure, but obviously not.

Sounds like they use bots for this and just use it to send spam. Hopefully they didn't go searching through the emails to find out personal info they can use to rob you.

:(

this happens when you use the same password for your email as you do for many sponsors.

Can you post what password did you used?I presume you wont use same password anymore anywhere.

I think what happened is I registered at some site or forum using my gmail account, and then used the same password on that site to login, so 100% my fault. Most likely the site was hacked or the owner of the site was a shady bastard.

Checked all my PC's and they are 100% clean.

The IP address showed the person as being in Argentina.

well,it happened to me weeks ago.
send a mail to gmail support and expect to wait about 3-5 days before they enable your login again.
i´ve sent 2 mails, second mail 2 days after the first one.

The best way to track them down might be by what they were spamming and any affiliate codes present.

They immediately disabled my account once they detected the hack (obviously the IP address from Argentina triggered some sort of red flag) and I was able to reinstate it instantly by having them send a text to my cell phone.
