Curiosity. Many people want to know the gritty details... and the attention your thread is getting reaffirms this. Much like often motorists will slow down / pull over to view the aftermath of a nasty automobile crash...

It's another example of the dark side of human nature that exists in all of us ... it's no wonder that murder mysteries, police shows, horror movies, soaps, etc are so popular, and in the adult realm, underage fantasies (ie. an 18+ actor dressed as a high school cheerleader, cartoon drawings, youth role play, etc), bondage, S&M, etc.

I agree with your sentiments that such detail that CNN provided is not necessary / insensitive to the family, but it's that dark side of human nature that wants to know, and the news media plays into that; "if bleeds, it leads" mentality.
