Paysite owners

Any paysite owners having problems with surfers signing up with checking accounts? Looks like the cats getting out of the bag on how to get into sites for free...anyone else haveing a BIG problem?

chupacabra 01-09-2003 04:55 PM

we gave up on taking checks online around mid 2001, just not worth it... we were seeing near 70% on everage of any check transaction coming back as bad or returned, just don't take them at all and save yourself some bandwidth..!

well that doesn't sound good, jus started to get people promoting my site, and w/ 70 unique's so far, and 1 trial signup, and 1 full month signup, both were done through check. :\

Yeah word is getting out how easy it is to get into ANY paysite that accepts checks for free. I was getting about 50 checks a day coming back as returned or bad and i was thinking to myself...could there be that many fucking deadbeats out there without 30 friggin bucks in their checking account? So i called CCbill and asked them and they did the Ol' "i dunno" routine knowing damn well what the fuck was going on. Then i figured out why all these checks were coming back. If you own a paysite and accept checks im sure your feeling this...if not you will be soon.

salsbury 01-09-2003 06:29 PM

what's the word, and how do they do it? i never use my checkbook except for rent, so don't worry not tryin to scam ya. heh.

OneHungLo 01-09-2003 06:35 PM

Any other paysite owners out there know what im talking about?:helpme

mpegposter 01-09-2003 06:38 PM

Talk to Dan at www.achdebit.com he can give you a breakdown on the averages and costs of running check processing properly.

drops 01-09-2003 06:41 PM

why take down a way to get into your site? so what you have checks coming back to you.. I have a $1 trial for a month.. and I get denials everyday...

NEVER NEVER take away a way for someone that doesnt have a CC to get access to your sites..

OneHungLo 01-09-2003 06:43 PM

Yeah i have talked to several processors about this, aint nothing to stop this shit. The only way to stop this would be if they could check to see if the funds were in the account instantly like they do with credit cards. Until then its a free ride into any site that accepts checks.

BrutalMaster 01-09-2003 06:43 PM

I have had a few check signups, not that many, however. My billing processor has a feature that doesn't allow for immediate access for check users. I just set it so the check has to clear before they can gain entry...so no real problem with checks bouncing. I also let them know in advance that they won't get in until their check clears and that may be as long as ten business days.

BJ 01-09-2003 06:44 PM

netbilling uses a couple verification services that will basically, as I understand it, verifies that it is in fact a checking account, matches the address info, and screens for fraud.

What if you got 50 or so shitbags comming into your site rackin up your badwidth bill on a daily basis? Remember it takes 2-5 days to even check to see if the funds are even in the account.

would you rather turn away business or keep it and deal with it? I think GloBill does the hold on checks.. but GloBill = Lost Sales..

I hear what your sayin.. but bandwidth is cheap bro.. I wouldn't stress about it do much

Yeah i hear what your saying but it gets irritating not to mention that my affiliates must see these coming back and be like what the fuck.

BV 01-09-2003 07:02 PM

Yes check returns suck, 50% of mine get returned. But the ones that are good generally have a high retention and stay a while.

Don't offer any trial memberships or one time bill with checks, just a 1 month recurring option.

:2 cents:

Cheers,
BV

With Globill you get to choose whether to put the check hold or not. We initially had that, but since we had a fairly low bad check rate, we now grant instant access.

Do the math, people... Assume your bandwidth is .50/gig and your average surfer pulls 1-2 gig a month, you are looking at a $1 bandwidth bill. If your monthly charge is $20, you can afford to have 19 bad checks for every one good one and still make money!!!

drops 01-09-2003 07:28 PM

exactly.. lol

Why is that? Tell me so I may consider changing processor again :winkwink: Glo-Bill does have a feature that you may use to not give a surfer access until check cashes. I used it and got absolutely "0" check sign-ups.. then what's the point? Yes, many checks get bounced yet any extra sign-ups=extra money in my pocket :glugglug

[The Leader] 01-09-2003 07:44 PM

I stopped taking checks all together some time ago for that reason.

wouncie 01-09-2003 07:45 PM

Checks suck, but its all gravy.... It's not like u had to work 9-5 and not get paid. Consider them extra.
No trials!

Yes. But there are lurkers in the shadows here, and it's best not to post shit like this in public. Put it this way, unless you are doing quiet-type signups, online checks are not worth it.

We tried accepting checks for one week. 83% returned NSF (read: fraudulent). Meanwhile, the freeloading bastards have up to 5 days of access to the members area.

No trials? Trust me, online checks are FREE trials, no matter how you look at it...:1orglaugh
