Also some other useful settings there for protecting your admin, the old favourite hotlinking. And a few things you probably wouldn't even think about being able to do in .htaccess

If you put all those "tricks" in htaccess and manage to get some traffic, your server will go down for sure. Don't use what you don't need. And for blocking use firewall, not htaccess.

I restrict access to wp-admin by IP. Is there a way to restrict directories like this using iptables?

I am struggling with htaccess files on my blogs since a while... Proper setup caused permalink errors on the blogs. Thanks to MojoHost's excellent support team this was resolved 12 hours ago!! :)

Of course, not a good idea to add to much to your .htaccess files. Only what you need/want

That's why you have them placed in the server config and not in the .htaccess file.

you cant restrict access to dirs by iptables, just ips in general, and which protocol.
