Poverty in the U.S. spikes
Poverty in the U.S. spikes - Sep 2010
http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/2010/...y_rate.top.gif NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The nation's poverty rate jumped to 14.3% in 2009, its highest level since 1994, and the 43.6 million Americans in need is the highest number in 51 years of record-keeping, the government said Thursday. The Office of Management and Budget defined the poverty threshold level as less than $21,954 for a family of four in 2009. The poverty rate increased for all racial groups except Asians. The jump, reported as part of the regular annual Census Bureau's "Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States," was not unexpected. Many Americans lost their jobs. Poverty increased less than many experts were projecting beforehand. Regionally, the South was the poorest area of the country, with a rate of 15.7%. It also experienced the biggest jump in poverty, 1.4 percentage points from 14.3% in 2008. The West had a poverty rate of 14.8%, the Midwest rate was 13.3% and the Northeast rate was 12.2%. The government also said the number of Americans with health coverage dropped for the first time since record-keeping began in 1987. LINK |

What REALLY pisses me off about our country is that we take better care of people that live in other countries than we do in our own country, which is very sad. They're more than happy to approve to send BILLIONS to other countries and then turn around and cut the little money that's left to important things here.

Census: 1 in 7 Americans live in poverty - Sep 2010 Other census findings: ?Among the working-age population, ages 18 to 65, poverty rose from 11.7 percent to 12.9 percent. That puts it at the highest since the 1960s, when the government launched a war on poverty that expanded the federal role in social welfare programs from education to health care. ?Poverty rose among all race and ethnic groups, but stood at higher levels for blacks and Hispanics. The number of Hispanics in poverty increased from 23.2 percent to 25.3 percent; for blacks it increased from 24.7 percent to 25.8 percent. The number of whites in poverty rose from 8.6 percent to 9.4 percent. ?Child poverty rose from 19 percent to 20.7 percent. Beginning next year, the government plans to publish new, supplemental poverty figures that are expected to show even higher numbers of people in poverty than previously known. The figures will incorporate rising costs of medical care, transportation and child care, a change analysts believe will add to the ranks of both seniors and working-age people in poverty. FULL LINK :2 cents: Expect more changes. First, poverty & debt must be widespread, painful, and inescapable. Then they will "save us" by ensuring we are firmly secured to the government teat forever. We are close. This brings us closer. The enslavement is near completion. |
Is poverty really on the rise?
This past week an old friend hit me up. He told me he's been unemployed now for nearly two years. His benefits have run out, and he's now forty years old and - I'm not kidding - living in his parents basement. The catch is I'm sure he's listed as "living below the poverty level" but it's not like he's going hungry or anything. I have another friend who is completely on state support and on the table has no income. Why work full time when he can work part time and collect benefits? I have no doubt that the poverty level has risen in the past three years, but I wonder how much of it is close to being correctly counted. |
