Anyone know if its legal to run porn sites in Australia

I was wondering, if anyone knew if its legal to run a porn site in Australia.

Is a licence needed?

I have the chance to buy some very good australian porn domain names, but im a bit worried they will be closed down or worse i will get into some kind of legal trouble.

I can see there is some .com.au australian porn domain names - but there isnt many at all, so i was hoping somene could shed some light on this, ive tried searching google but couldnt find an answer.

Any info would be much appreciated :)

What am i asking too is about buying .COM.AU porn domain names, licenced in Australia.

I know with porn magazines you need a licence to run them, is it the same for adult sites?

I want to start a few white labels with Aussie domain names..

As long as they are not hosted in AU, they can't do shit. Trouble is you need an ABN (australian business number) to register .com.au domains.

to buy AU names you need a company running the samething from what i know

so if you wanted to buy sextoys.com.au you need a company with ABN based around sextoys ...

Hmm interesting points. I DO know that you need an Australian ABN to buy a domain - although i have a number of Australian domains under the one company name, which are nothing to do with the business name.

Can anyone else shed some light on this?

Thanks for your replies so far guys, much appreciated :)

I'm sure you can use the .com.au domains for porn, but no nude pics can be displayed if hosting in Australia. Use USA or other hosting.

.com.au on my registrar (enetica) requires a trademark, or company name/ACN, or BRN. The latter is a basic sole trader business name registration and costs something like $80 for 3 years in Vic. You don't need a Pty Ltd company.

So rowan, you own an Australian domain register? Have you registered many porn domain names?

rowan 09-16-2010 05:13 AM

No, I mean the registrar that I use does it that way. I presume it would be the same or similar with other registrars.

Is there any particular reason you want a .com.au pr0n domain name? Is the content Aussie related?

kazbalah 09-16-2010 05:19 AM

Oh ok sure, i see what you mean.

No the content is not aussie related, but its possible to purchase some good domain names that can generate alot of search engine traffic easily.

Basicly i can hit the top spots in a few days for a few good keywords, plus no competition they wont be going anywhere anytime soon.
