High fructose corn syrup, by any other name

The makers of high fructose corn syrup want to sweeten up its image with a new name: corn sugar.

The bid to rename the sweetener by the Corn Refiners Association comes as Americans' concerns about health and obesity have sent consumption of high fructose corn syrup, used in soft drinks but also in bread, cereal and other foods, to a 20-year low.

The group applied Tuesday to the Food and Drug Administration to get the "corn sugar" name approved for use on food labels.

Who gives a fuck. The shit will still get you fat and rot your fucking teeth out of your skull. A spade's a spade

TheDoc 09-14-2010 09:44 AM

Maybe if they call it sugar more mothers will identify what it is... Plenty of people have no idea that high fructose corn syrup is bad for you, but once you tell them it's an extreme amount of sugar, the light bulb kicks on.

james_clickmemedia 09-14-2010 09:54 AM

They need to bad that crap.
Stop feeding corn to our cows would be great also.

cherrylula 09-14-2010 10:05 AM

great, soon it will be organic corn sugar.... the things corporations do to keep dumb Americans dumb...

The average American consumes over 60lbs of HFCS a year.

Ethersync 09-14-2010 10:31 AM

That shit's poison...

ottopottomouse 09-14-2010 10:36 AM

They renamed Aspartame to AminoSweet to get away from the bad reputation it has got as well.

pornguy 09-14-2010 10:38 AM

I like to add that to soda.. Mmmmm

saucygirl 09-14-2010 12:20 PM

Dumb Americans still wonder why the fuck they're getting fat and it's because they're too lazy to read the damn label and can't seem to be bothered drinking water or trying to eat non-processed foods.

jwerd 09-14-2010 12:26 PM

I don't have to worry about my food being any processed crap, sweetners, enhancer or whatever, cause they are just grain based crap and I've cut out all grains and switched to meat, veggies and some fruit for my carbs and I feel great.

Not only is it easier to maintain (don't have to workout like a fucking beast), don't have to count calories, and I get to eat as much as I want with lots of tasty, healthy fats. I have the same amount, if not more energy, than I did when consuming all those tasteless, bland grains :) Paleo/Primal for the win.

Sugar is sugar... if they call it 'sugar', it will make labels simpler for people to understand.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has, over the past few decades, gradually displaced cane and beet sugar as the sweetener of choice for soft drinks, candy and prepared foods. In recent years, there have been a growing number claims that HFCS is a significant health risk to consumers, responsible for obesity, diabetes, heart disease and a wide variety of other illnesses.
...
However, the question remains — is HFCS more of a health risk than other sweeteners? Many of the sources that demonize HFCS list alternative sweeteners — cane sugar, honey, agave syrup, etc. — that they claim are healthier than HFCS, but those claims usually rest primarily on the fact that these alternatives to HFCS are “natural” rather than any actual data showing that they are safer than HFCS.
...
For people who are worried about their health or their children’s health — and who isn’t, these days — the data suggest that the best choice is to reduce intake of all sweeteners containing fructose. That includes not only the evil HFCS, but also natural cane sugar, molasses (which is just impure cane sugar), brown sugar (ditto) and honey. Even “unsweetened” (no added sugar) fruit juices need to be considered when limiting your family’s fructose intake.

Already says that on the label if you look on the back high fructose corn syrup is included in the nutritional information as "sugars".

Doesn't matter what they call it most people are too stupid to care. What they need to do is drop the tax on importing sugar so companies can at least use real sugar instead of this corn sugar BS.

That's a great idea, too!

MaDalton 09-14-2010 04:58 PM

ever wondered why that stuff is avoided in other countries?

The Trash Heap 09-14-2010 05:00 PM

If we are what we eat, Americans are corn and soy.

They won't do that because the corn syrup provides a sales outlet for the already heavily subsidized corn industry.

Also Iowa is the first state to begin the nomination process for president with their early caucus. They are a huge corn producing state so if they want to shove this shit at us the politicians go along.
