Torn rotator cuff

The other day I woke up with a sore shoulder. Did not pay much attention to it. Sunday when I went riding it hurt, a lot. Today I decided to get a massage and try to get the knot out. 10 minutes into it she said, "you have a torn rotator cuff."

Doc has to get approval for a cortisone shot. Hoping they can get this done by Friday as I leave Saturday.

The timing sucks.

I wouldn't do the cortisone shot if I were you... I had both shoulders scoped and as a matter of fact got disabled from my career due to the shoulder issues. and the doc and others I've spoken with said it was a real bad idea. great temp fix but in the long run causes more issues than you had.

how the hell that happen?

I just need something quick. I do not have time to wait around.

I have a feeling it may have something to do with walking the dog and him pulling me unexpectedly.

No, actually told her she would get paid for her hour but I needed to get out of there and try to find someone to take care of me. I laughed to myself when I saw the line for a tip.

JP-pornshooter 09-08-2010 04:31 PM

once you get the shot, start working on stretching as soon as possible. cortisone is known to limit your motion, you dont want that to happen.
you need to get blood into the cuff to start repairing, best way (imho) is to grab an overhead bar with both hands, just dangle for a few minutes. not now but once the pain has diminished etc..
once you have a shoulder injury you gotta be really careful with that shoulder, re-train it and keep the internal muscles in shape..

I figure dragging a suitcase and lugging a laptop and camera around EU will keep the shoulder stretched. I had shoulder surgery for something else back in the early 90's. I really do not want to go thru that again.

Damn sorry to hear it man, that's rough. How long do you think the healing process will take?

I really don't know. Guess it depends how bad it really is. If I can get an inflammatory and/or some pain pills to get me through the next three weeks I can pretty much baby it as I won't have the dog or motorcycles to irritate it.

I was told NEVER to lift weight above my head. every time I have it has hurt me pretty bad for a few months. even shooting hand held with my 200-400 hurt me pretty bad. so with that in mind not to sure about hanging from my arms would be a good idea at all. maybe BD has a different injury than me. I have rotator cuff injuries.

2 operations, 3 years of PT and i still can't cary stuff over my head... go figure

I feel for you. I tore the rotator cuff in both my left and right shoulder. You should get a MRI to confirm the tear. If you need a good orthopedic surgeon to repair it, I have one in Santa Monica. After removing the bandages, you couldn't tell that I had surgery.

If you're planning on getting surgery and it's in your dominant shoulder, start using your other hand to do basic stuff that you take for granted such as wiping your ass and bathing. I didn't read the paper from the doctor before my surgery and it told me to practice doing things with my less dominant hand. I quickly found out why.

baddog 09-08-2010 09:03 PM

I do not plan on surgery. Been there, done that.

TheDoc 09-08-2010 09:14 PM

Man your way through it, pull ups and military press, if it isn't hurting it isn't working.

DavieVegas 09-08-2010 09:19 PM

That is horrible. my best friend had this happen when he was like 12. Never played tennis the same again. Hurt it playing national tennis as a junior :(

Seth Manson 09-08-2010 10:13 PM

I've torn both of mine.

Cortizone helps and it helps instantly and last for a few weeks. 800mg Motrin will also help quite a bit, but be careful and always take it with food as it can damage your stomach lining if you take it by itself.

Physical therapy helps, they give you exercises with light weights and then a massage and maybe use a TENS unit to help promote the healing.

jackknoff 09-08-2010 11:32 PM

How bad is the tear? Is it something that can heal on it's own (with shots), or do you think you might need surgery?

Spanx!

Unless he's attached to a fucking Buick, I doubt this did it.

Have the same damage to the left shoulder from trying to push a vehicle out of the snow.. uphill. Then, slipped. Had surgery on it, and all it did was limit my range of movement more until I bought a home gym and worked through the pain to get it back. Lots of luck - and as you decided, don't bother with the surgery. All it does is make life worse. The pain pump was nice, though, even if it does cause more damage.

Davy 09-09-2010 01:30 AM

Hope the cortisone goes well.
An unexperienced doc gave me a shot in the shoulder a couple of months ago. It hurt like hell and I still have problems because of it.

Hope you went to see a doc and he confirmed it and you not going off of a diagnosis by a masseuse.

Not tying to be funny, but that's not good for someone your age to have that, broken hips etc... all heal so much slower when you older. Hope you feel well soon.

BVF 09-14-2010 09:02 PM

It must suck to get old and watching yourself breakdown....I know how it was because back when I lived in Puerto Rico in like '07, I sat on my ass SO MUCH that my hips would actually lock up and it was hard to walk sometimes....But now I've lost weight, I'm in shape, and I'm sexy....Plus exercise and supplements takes YEARS off of your look...

Fuck man, GET IN THE GYM!...I see old men every day that are in fantastic shape....We know you like to look "cool" because of the biker thing....So ride that bike to a gym and lift weights and do cardio IMMEDIATELY...

V_RocKs 09-14-2010 09:15 PM

Time to get back into the gym.

Torn rotator cuff come from years of misc shit.

The best option is to get an MRI and get the best shoulder doctor to fix you up.

The protocol for this procedure is to make you do therapy for about six weeks but that is a scam. The scam doesn't come from your doctor, it comes from the insurance company making the doctor play a defensive strategy. The doctor can already tell from the MRI that you need surgery to fix your shoulder but the insurance company wants to know if you did your therapy.

Get the MRI and don't waste time. I have seen a lot of good people who grapple(judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) with me waste a lot of time in therapy only to find out they need surgery after six weeks.

Good luck

Rangermoore 09-15-2010 02:44 AM

I tore my rotator cuff and let it go for about 3 months after it started to hurt real bad.. BIG MISTAKE.. I got a few cortisone shots and yes it was a quick fix but it did more harm than good.. I was playing AAA ball and went back out and after another strong outing I was done for good.. I did get surgery and it has never hurt again but I have never been able to throw the ball with the same speed or distance again.. I should have had the surgery the moment it started to hurt.. Good luck..

They could not do anything before I left besides prescribe some vicodin which don't do crap. Toughing it out until I get back from Europe.

kane 09-15-2010 03:43 AM

That sucks. Hopefully it doesn't mess with your trip too much. I did the same thing a few years ago. Luckily no surgery, but I did end up with some physical therapy out of the deal.

It is making things pretty difficult at times, but I will survive.

At least it wasn't a broken hip

Tennis match with Jesus back in 28AD. Reached for a far shot and the ball hit the racquet funny.

EllaBlack 09-15-2010 02:12 PM

:( I'm sorry! Sonny had that happen, sucks! Here's to the pain subsiding!

PXN 09-15-2010 02:19 PM

A massage person said you have a rotator cuff torn and you believe it? I would get a second opinion if I were you. It could be anything from bicep tendinitis, frozen shoulder to should impingement. If you have limited passive and active arm motion it most likely not a RCT, get a second opinion would be a wise option before getting into any treatment.

docputer 09-15-2010 03:49 PM

Somehow I did the same damn thing, and I have no idea how it happened.

Shoulder hurts like hell, and I am supposed to go for some kind of shot tomorrow.
