Mobile Encoding Settings
What settings are people using for encoding video for mobile members areas ?
We are currently doing them at : 3G = 428x240 @ 600kbps WiFi = 720x400 @ 1200kbps Thinking about adding a Iphone 4 encode at 960x640.. Also maybe changing settings of 3G to 3G = 480x270 @ 700kbps Currently encode 3gp for older phones and mp4 for newer. Finding that Iphone is the majority of our mobile traffic. What settings is everybody using..? |

i use some preset in my converter named "iphone mp4"
480x320, 512kbps, 29.97fps comes out looking "just ok" but thats how i want it since i'm converting them for free use... which is why i didnt reply when i first saw this thread - i figured you're serving it up for members |

I do tests using Handbrake pre-sets and when I find good settings I set them up in ffmpeg on the server to batch. Trying to find good settings for the Iphone 4 to make use of the higher resolution screen. |
why are you doing them so big man?
arnt mobile phones max 480x320 resolution? |
Well mobile videos should be quick to run, thus you need to lower bitrates.. if you use h.264 codec with 2 passes, you can get away with a video at 300 to 400kbps that looks good. anything over than that you are looking at files that are pretty big for the average 3g user to download in any timely manner.
If you really are worried about the quality, do one at 750kbps and then a lower bit res at like 300k |
