GPL question

Im updating a wordpress theme that hasnt been updated since 2005 (yes 5 years)

adding stuff like

widget support
custom header support
custom backgrounds
post thumbnails
ajax loading of posts
+more.

now since its gpl, and im free to modify it, do i have to call it a fork of the orig theme?

I have tried contacting the author to let him know.

I also have left all of his mention in place, footer link, in style.css his name is still in there, just added a comment its a mod of the orig theme and all credit goes to him.

Is their anything im missing?

As long as you release all of your public bits you added for shims/etc, youdon't need to add any of your proprietary data. You've given credit - now, you may need to offer the sources if someone asks. Charge them a general fee for a CD or just make it available to download.

you don't have to release anything
you don't have to notify the original author
if you release it you have to release it as GPL, and include his info too

Assuming this was for his own personal use only, why would this thread even exist?

I'm not assuming anything, so I replied in such a way to cover both situations. Is that a problem? :1orglaugh

As long as you release it for free, it probably shouldn't be a problem...

Well, Fris -

Is this for your own personal use, or something you want to extend to 'clients'? If you want to give to clients who pay you, you need to release at least parts of it.
