IMHO, they shouldn't use people names at all.
For one, the current system results in duplicate hurricane names over the years, and secondly, makes difficult to know where the hurricane was (ie. Atlantic or Eastern Pacific basins) let alone when it occurred. A better name system would be something like tropical storm location; year; number. And amazingly, though it's something I've never seen mentioned in the mass news media, the National Hurricane Center, internally, actually does identify tropical storms using such a system... EARL is AL072010 FIONA is AL082010 GASTON is AL092010 Much better way with no confusion. And less hurt feelings too - many people with the name Katrina will forever have a name associated with one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history. Ron |
