they used to use female only, for decades, then switched to male and female names in the 70s.

IMHO, they shouldn't use people names at all.

For one, the current system results in duplicate hurricane names over the years, and secondly, makes difficult to know where the hurricane was (ie. Atlantic or Eastern Pacific basins) let alone when it occurred.

A better name system would be something like tropical storm location; year; number.

And amazingly, though it's something I've never seen mentioned in the mass news media, the National Hurricane Center, internally, actually does identify tropical storms using such a system...

EARL is AL072010
FIONA is AL082010
GASTON is AL092010

Much better way with no confusion. And less hurt feelings too - many people with the name Katrina will forever have a name associated with one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history.

Hurricane Mitch was a bad hurricane back in 1998 hitting over the Caribbean. With over 10000 deaths, it was one of the strongest hurricanes with wind speed of 180mph.

Natalie & I arrived in the Dominican to find muddy seas.... That was weeks after.

I'm sure that the people named Andrew feel no sympathy for them.

And it was only in the early 50's that they were given any official names. Prior to that, the big ones are only remembered by the year and, sometimes, by whatever name the newspapers gave them such as, The Long Island Express of 1938 or The Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944.

I've spent a lot of summers on the beach in NJ, so this is a subject that's always interested me.

In 2005 they went through all the letters and had to use greek names like Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Zeta. Hurricane Zuzana would be a cool name. But she would not do any damage if she took after me at all. I'm all about love :) I'm looking to make soe tee shirts today that say Hurricanes Blow!

The Long Island Express of 1938
Saw a great documentary on the Cat 5 1938 Hurricane. Caused $400M damage, 600 deaths and demolishd 6,000 homes. It never really made any news headlines because it was overshadowed by the Czechoslovakian crisis.
